Besides giving a 'deaf' gypsy 10 euro in Europe - nothing.
Lots of attempts though.
 
There is always a first time for everything.
Last week I needed to use e-hailing to get to work. Used InDrive.
The app said OK there's someone coming to pick me up... within 5 seconds the app said I was picked up, dropped off and the trip concluded and had the audacity to ask me to rate the driver.

Reported the amount that went off my bank as fraud to Capitec.
Woke up today to a refund, and that an investigation is ongoing.

Lesson learnt: Stick to legitimate platforms.
 
Many years ago at an ATM while drawing money.

Skimmed the card, and shoulder surfed my pin - they drew my entire student bursary allowance for the year :( Luckily Standard Bank paid it all back to me.

Since then, if I ever drew money again at an ATM (if I had to), I was aggressively alert..
 
We signed up for Rain. Speedtests were atrocious. After every call it improved for a day or so and then dropped to unusable again. We lived within spitting distance of the closest tower, but it was still useless. Fortunately the debit order was against a virtual card so we just closed the account.
Rain tried for years to get us to pay, even after the router was collected.
 
Since we're now including ISPs in the mix, that opens up the scope quite a bit.
I've been scammed by the following of course:
OpenWeb - that Keoma Write douchebag.
Afrihost - twice, once for hosting and once for internet
 
i forgot about this one - when i was around 15 looooooooooooong ago 3 of us went into Hillbrow to play pool , some guy asked us to witness something and took us to another guy who did that 3 card shuffle and said find the king of hearts and ill double your money .

we actually guessed the correct card and the guy just walked away with our money .
 
To add to the list of honourable mentions where I've not been scammed, but rather done in: asap deliveries a few times. Ordered some coffee refills once and every single bag was somehow punctured, spoiling the coffee. Never got a refund for that order. Hifi Corp, Incredible Corruption, one of my local pnps, admyt, etc. have all done me in over the years for small amounts. Just not worth the hassle of chasing it up. On balance though, I've probably scored more from them than they've cost me, so... meh.

Dodged a bullet there. All my orders arrived, but that was pre 2022. Only two things where I felt I was done-in with them was an open box ezviz camera that was linked to another account that I never got working, and cheap box of solid CAT6 cable that turned out to be CCA. :(

Comair/Kulula Bankruptcy - I had around R100k in flight vouchers with them from cancelled flights during COVID. Was included as a creditor in their insolvency, but the thing kept on getting postponed, and eventually I stopped getting any updates. Not sure what the status of their insolvency is now, but I doubt I will ever see a cent.

Guess that's not really a scam though - However, if they just refunded the tickets when the flights were originally cancelled, instead of insisting one had to take vouchers - this could all have been avoided.
 
Back in the early 2000's I sold a PS2 to some guy in Jhb. This was around the time when cheque fraud was taking off.

The scumbag deposits a check into my FNB account. I see the funds cleared a day later so I post him the PS2.

About a week later the funds are reversed. Bank tells me the cheque bounced and was fraudulent. I'm like WTF. How can you just reverse it.

He dissapears off the face off the earth. No longer answering calls.

I hope he was hit by a bus!

Not fallen for any scam since then.
 
Bought a house. Dealt with most of it via email as I live abroad. Transferred 900k into what I thought was the lawyers' bank account. Something didn't feel right so I went through everything carefully again and noticed the sender's email address had a tiny difference to the the lawyers' address who I have been dealing with the whole time.

Turns out our emails got intercepted and I sent 900k to a scammer. Luckily noticed it quick enough to call my bank to freeze the transaction. Took 2 months to get the money back.

How the hell does email interception happen the one time I needed to send a chunk of money? Inside job at the lawyers or bank or somewhere? All scammers should be burned at the stake!
