Four people suspected of being involved in terrorist related activities in Newclare and Azaadville in Johannesburg have been arrested, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Sunday.

Hangwani said the arrests followed prolonged investigations by the Hawks and state security into possible terror related activities in the Johannesburg area.

He said the suspects were aged between 20 and 24-years-old. The National Intervention Unit, the bomb squad and other law enforcement agencies aided in the arrests, Hangwani added.

He said the four suspects were identified after they attempted to travel to Syria in 2015. "Investigations showed they intended to join terrorist group Isis," Hangwani told News24.

According to Hangwani, the Hawks swooped on the suspects' locations, seizing several items for analysis.

Remain on high alert

Hawks national head, Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, said the arrests were a “very big step forward in the fight against terrorism”.

“But we cannot say that the problem has been solved. [These] terrorist organisations are recruiting in our country... law enforcement agencies will continue to work around the clock to prevent any form of recruitment on our soil.”

Ntlemeza said authorities would remain on high alert.

“We will diffuse any attempts to form any terrorist groups in our country. Our people should also be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police,” he said.

Hangwani said two of the suspects*would appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday facing terrorist related charges, while the remaining suspects would appear at Kagiso Magistrate's Court on firearms and explosives related charges.

So… the US, UK and Australian embassies was not ‘completely’ over the top when they had warned their travelling citizens in SA?

wow, so the dumbos in government and the ostriches who all called bs must be feeling the twits huh ........

The hawks have not yet revealed a single shred of evidence regarding there alleged involved in, or supporting terrorist activities. We dont even know if this is related to domestic terrorist activity or involvement in foreign terrorist activities. I suppose the charge sheet will be revealed to the press tomorrow (Monday) when the suspects appear in court. Lets wait and see.

This has nothing to do with the warnings from those countries. These guys were "support" for terrorist organizations in Syria, providing passports, money, places to cool off and spring boards

...and the explosives?
That aspect might be revealed in the court case seeing as its not really "explosives"

Edit: the big problem is that SA does not really know how to prosecute people under the Terrorism Act as seen previously

How do you know that it is not really explosives?
Let me make an example; I enjoy sport shooting, I am white and I hate the ANC and bad mouth them wherever I can. I make a racist remark and threaten to bomb them. I am arrested at home and they search my entire house where they come across a tin of MS200 gun powder used for reloading my own ammo for sport shooting.

They now say I had explosives at home seeing as the gun power is categorised as explosives under the Act

Cut off their hands and totties. Isn't this what ISIS does?

So a stun grenade is the new weapon of choice of IS... I am stunned.

I am not saying they're innocent, but given the info at hand it is sensationalist.

Lets wait and see what exactly they're charged with and what is the evidence. If the evidence is truly against them they should have the full might of the law thrown at them.

I say well done to the hawks for their work thus far.

Probably got pressured to arrest somebody just to make those warnings less stupid

If they want to go to Syria, let them go! Just ban them from ever coming back (not that they'll last long as part of ISIS anyway)
