When did you start thinking this to yourself. Have you read reviews at all? Are you telling me you just decided to buy a card called 4870X2 without properly researching it? Have you ever read anything that would lead you to believe that ATI released cards without testing them first? Apart from a fan ceasing to operate and the user not noticing, and the card then overheats and breaks, not even jst shutting off at a certain temp cut-off point..?

Now, honestly, I'm not trying to be harsh, and I would understand your reasoning if there was actually something that gave you reasonable cause to worry. But there is none.

Maybe go read a few reviews at www.tomshardware.com and you will see about some fan problems they got with different version catalyst drivers, installed together with some utility off the ATI drivers CD...

now stop ur moaning. :cool:

But serious issues arise with the combination of Smart Doctor and Catalyst 8.10 in 3D mode. Under load, the temperature exceeds 90°C. The maximum value shouldn’t exceed 85°C, which is why the high load test had to be aborted several times. The reason for the high temperature lies in the low fan speed, which should actually limit it to 85°C, but the fan didn’t even start to speed up at 90ºC. Because this is only a test, we eventually decided to let things rip and let the cards fall where they may—we expected to fry the two graphic processors, but the fan surprisingly decided to speed up at a temperature of 96°C, which of course is way too high.

Old freaking news buddy, jeezus, it takes a minute or two to change the fan speed to whatever speed you desire. There are a number of programs that can do it, including CCC. Even better, use ATT and create your own custom auto fan profile for each custom clock profile!

Yes, right that makes sense, you're the one who comes along looking to be comforted like a calf at it's mothers' teat, due to an issue that has no substance. You then try to pwn me using a quote from Tomshardware, wherein they specifically state it was because of the low fan speed. The fan speed problem was the foremost initial issue re: the 4800's high temps, and is old news. A search on google will yield you literally 100's of forum pages discussing and providing solutions.

But I'm on loopy pills, ..right, gosh, how didn't I see it before. My bad then! Sorry!

I'm not worried about "pwning" you, just pointed out that I do read reviews.

Lets just leave it to rest, dude... I was just afraid that R8000 might melt away If I push it too far - some cases do have better ventilation than other, hence why I asked.

Well you still have no viable reason to think it will "melt away", they're designed to handle the heat. I mean, how many times do you need to hear it until you believe it.
But by all means, keep worrying at least a little bit if it makes you feel better.
A badly ventilated case is not going to kill the card, and I highly doubt someone who's paying for a 4870X2 is gonna put it in a coffin-case with no fans and close up the vents at the back of the card. Then yes it will most likely get so hot that it is damaged irreparably.

Yes Sharkbait it was one post where I was lazy, but it was fairly clear to others that the bold type were my replies. But if you honestly can't tell the difference between bold and normal type, then.. wow, I suggest you see your local optometrist. It's kinda both our faults, you don't read posts properly and I'm apparently aggressive and lazy. Sorry babes.

quick question SharkBait - my friend has the normal 4870 and says he can't get fallout 3, and farcry 2 to run - now, i'm aware you need to patch it, but 1) are there patches for these 2 games already and 2) do most new games need a patch for the 4870 cards?
 
If I'm not mistaken, bold characters are normally quotes and normal typing the reply... But, enough is enough, maybe I did read like my a$$, but are more harsh with your replies than helpful.

Afaik, when the card gets to hot, it lowers performance and it is very seldom that it gets damaged beyond repair. I had one running in a room with no aircon or ventilation or any airflow for that matter and it is still working. Obviously the room was very hot and it was running in a case with just 1x 80mm fan and it didn't perform like is was supposed to, but nun the less, it's still working.

It must be something else, cause I am running FC2 on my pc without the hotfix from AMD and no updates to the game. Yes, performance will be better with the hotfix and there is a patch released for FC2. Not sure about Fallout 3.
 
My IceQ runs at 45C idle... Which is great... Goes to about 55C under-load... The first cards idled at 80C, these cards can run really hot without a problem... So its not really a big deal... By the time the card fails due to heat, it will be outdated and time for a new one anywas, hopefully it happens in the warranty time and you can get a free one :P

I have run both single and dual 4870's and had zero hassles playing Fallout3 or any ither game for that matter and no i have not dled any patches
 
The quickest solution to 4850 heat is to turn up the idle fan speed with Rivatuner. For some reason they set it way too low. 50% speed should keep the card around 60-70c idle. And I'm planning to reseat it with some AS5, should also make a big difference.

Generally between 30 and 40% is fine for sub 60 (if not 50) temps.

Cannot remember what mine idles at when i set the fan to 40%
 
Really? Mine's sitting at 62C with 50% fan speed. I think I need to reseat it with some proper thermal compound, AS5 or something.
