HD decoder and Vista

Nice, I see it sells for R1299 from http://www.hdcabling.co.za.

Question:
If I do the following.

HDMI output from Decoder to HDMI input of Tuner Card, then HDMI out via Graphics Card to HDMI input on TV.

Can this be done, and if so can I do the recording on my pc. What exactly does HDCP prohibit and do I then need the HD Fury as all connections would be HDMI?

If the DSTV PVR HD decoder supports HDCP and HDCP is enforced on
in the trasnsmission protocol of the signal coming into the decoder via
the dish, that means that to get 720p signal out of the HDMI socket
on the decoder, an HDCP enabled device has to be connected.
If you connect your graphics capture card, it won't be recognised
as an HDCP device and downsampled SD video will be outputted.
So you can capture video but SD PAL resolution and not 720p.
If you put the HDFury there, the decoder will think that is an HDCP
enabled TV/projector/screen and output the high definition signal.
The HDFury then passes the HD signal onto a VGA port - so you
can connect a VGA capable device (such as a non-HDCP capable
legacy TV or your video capture board).

The upcoming version of HDFury, 2, allows for a VGA and a component output
too plus it allows for audio pass through.

To capture HD signal, you need an HDCP capable device between your
decoder and the capture device.

Thanks this helps allot.

So the HD Fury will need to be between the decoder and the TVTuner/Capture card.

Then the video will pass through my PC, but do I still then need a HDCP Compliant graphics card? Cause the video will then pass through the graphics card to my TV.

I reckon this is gonna be way to expensive and might just be best to get the HD PVR decoder and say good bye to media centre.

No, you won't need an HDCP compliant card to capture the video coming
from the HDFury. The HDFury is there to get rid of the HDCP and to
filter out only pure 1080p or 720p (depending on what you put into
the HDFury) video. That video you can then play on your legacy TV
(without HDCP) or capture to HDD.

If I were you I'd wait for the HDFury2 as it allows additional options,
such as component output, plus there were positioning issues with
the original video in the HDFury. Have a read on their curtpalme.com website.

I'm suprised the HDCP consortium sold the makers of HDFury an HDCP key.
As you may know, the way HDCP works is the BD player or HD satellite
Decoder checks if the attached device has the right key (handshaking)
and if that's cool, it outputs the full HD signal, if not it outputs 540p for
BD players (as I've noticed on my legacy HD plasma) or SD PAL/NTSC or
possibly NOTHING at all.

One thing is sure, you won't find an HDCP enabled capture board around,
that would defeat the purpose of HDCP. The HDFury allows this.

Once you capture the video, you can play it back on anything you want,
it will be 720P (DSTV) but you won't need any HDCP devices anymore.
