HD DVD Closing shop ?

looks like it... Toshiba have given up :D and they were the ones pushing HD-DVD the hardest.

I dont think they will recover ....

Let's see how MS Reposonds ;

What are the chances of a Sony Branded External Blu Ray Drive :P

the ps3 killed them

i mean 2-10 million ppl will have blue ray in the next 5 years with that console, thats a large audience

But Blu-ray standalone DVD player are not freely available to purchase.I bet when the HD DVD Player hit the market in full swing it will out do Blu-ray players because HD DVD Players will be a lot cheaper.

Well it's not gonna be swinging any further as the major backer of the format (Toshiba) has pulled out. It pretty much is game over for HD DVD .

Is this a good or bad thing? Was there a big difference between the 2 standards i.t.o. quality etc. ?

for once sony looks to have backed the right horse. have to say i was always partial to HD DVD.

Just of late I have patting myself even more on the back for getting PS3. Looks like it was a well calculated risk!

It won't be long till the EU regulators come knocking.

Blu-ray players (not P3) have hardly dropped in price with competition from HD DVD,
now with the format war over there appears to be even less chance of a Blu-ray player that most can afford.

That's because HD-DVD players were being sold waaaay below what it cost to produce them - Toshiba needed to gain market acceptance and that was the only way. BD player pricing will reduce on market growth, but probably not at the speed that HD-DVD did. Expect about 30-50% per year. So now a standalone BD Player costs around R6000, by this time next year it will probably be below R3000. Toshiba was selling HD-DVD players at around R1200, but it was plainly not a sustainable strategy and was designed to force market acceptance.

yeah, so far the PS3 is still the cheapest BD player considerig u getting a gamming console as well as a wireless media streamer... all for R6000, then again the 60gb has been stopped for the 80gig, and no pricing as yet...
