HD-DVD recaptures the lead

I was speaking to some non technical people the other day about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

You know what they said to me, they are looking forward to HD-DVD as they have heard about this High Definition thing on 702. They had no idea that Blu-Ray was HD as well...

It's the general public that will choose the winner not anyone who posts on these forums..
 
I think HD-DVD are not marketing their product well enough. Staying in Hong Kong for the last month and it's obvious Blu-Ray is doing better. Releases on shelves blu-ray outnumber HD-DVD 2:1 which I think is the biggest problem. BLu-ray packages look way better than HD-DVD. People at stores only look in the blu-ray section and dont really notice hd-dvd. Hope this is short lived. Most peoplel know abt blu-ray but not HD-DVD as well...quite a worry.

I think by end of year when the cheaper sub $300 models come out for HD-dvd, that'll be when the HD-DVD really fightback.

Xbox Punters will often say that Microsoft got it right, that digital distribution of High Def content is the future. I think they are right, just not the near future. Digital Distribution depends greatly on the global broadband penetration. I feel there is still time for another 1 or 2 disc based formats.

I like the fact that Blu-Ray offers more as a disc storage medium and am personally rooting for that.

Okay before I get flamed I don't really know much about this so take it with a pinch of salt.

From what I have read it seems like HD-DVD is the better format. Whilst Blu-Ray offers more disc space it is slower, more expensive and more fragile than HD-DVD.

Also HD-DVD's now come in dual layer discs which actually hold more than Blu-Rays...

Blu-Ray discs are also heavily DRM'd which is never a good thing....

This could all just be anti-Sony BS though
 
Gav, yes and no.

You're right in terms of durability, cost etc, but Blu-ray is denser, it's 22-25Gb per layer HD-DVD is 15Gbpl. So yes a dual layer HD-DVD is only bigger than a single layer BR-DVD. In theory, both can support up to 3 layers, but as of yet on HD-DVD has implement 3 layers.

On the DRM side, HD-DVD and BR support the exact same encryption scheme AACS the difference was that HD-DVD made it optional to the copyright holder, Blu-ray made DRM mandatory.
 
Just past the fish tank is all the ones that they have for now....

I got Superman Returns and The Departed on Blu-Ray from them. I actually got Reno to order the Blu Rays after explaining to him what they were (like most places now a days lol). The one's on display are the one's he ordered that night a few weeks back. He thought HD-DVD was playable on the PS3.

Okay everyone seems to work out worldwide stats using Amazon now?

Anyway according to that very interesting site it's pretty much a tie still...

The two things that jumped out at me though where.

The huge margin of victory HD-DVD has over Blu-Ray in internet searches. If more people want HD-DVD then it will most probably win.

And then secondly

The number of titles that can be purchased today. BR 276 - HD 246, compare that to the thousands on DVD and I see no reason to go out and buy either player at the moment...
