HD Multimedia Machine

For me the best is to get a PS3 and use a program name "ps3 media server" to stream movies over the network.
HD is not only about picture quality but also sound and the ps3 is dolby DTS, etc certified.
Also the best thing you will be able to play blu-ray movies

You can get dolby certified sound for a PC as well... And a PS3 cant play mkv files (which is usually what 720p and 1080p movies are stored as) out of the box.

If you are using ps3 media server you can play mkv files. I now it can't out of the box but still it can and ps3 media server is so easy to setup.

1. Install on pc.
2. Switch on you ps3.
3. Run program (it will then search for ps3).
4. Go to videos/music/pictures on ps3 menu.
5. search for your videos you want to play.
6.enjoy.

if you install a dolby sound for pc it will work out more than a ps3.
best of all if you want to play a ps3 game you can do that.

the only drawback with ps3 is that you need another pc to use ps3 media server but if you do then that is the best option to go for.

Other PC also needs to be quite powerful right? It needs to be able to transcode the mkv files on the fly which gets really difficult at 1080p. As for dolby sound, add R800 for that so PC comes to R4k, which is still less than a new PS3. Granted, you cant really play any games on the PC, especially multiplayer friendly ones.

Might as well get a PS3. It costs R3000, plays blu-ray, pretty much all the formats of video, it has USB, Wi-fi etc etc. as well as games. It's also nice looking and quiet in operation.

not really. My brother is using a ps3 and the pc he's using is an: amd 3200+ basic mobo and 2gb ram + Hard drives and it works fine. new ps3 slim 120GB is about R3800 at look&listen

agree to you 100%. I also thought a pc is better than using a ps3 until my brother got his ps3 I was so amazed that I went and bnought myself a ps3 that will work me out cheaper and I can play games on it. with the ps3 move coming out it's a Wii too.

I have no doubt it works for 480p video, I am asking about 720p and 1080p video.

Between a proper PC and a PS3, i would definitely choose a PC for movies, and old games....but if you want a gaming machine and movies maybe go for PS3

Also another option is to go with one of these western digital live players. they are cheap and can play any file even mkv flawlessly. Also comes with a remote and easy menu to navigate.

xtreamer apparently has some problems playing music, its difficult or the interface is hard to work. Cant quite remember. Otherwise it is a great piece of kit

I'm using a iOmega ScreenPlay TV Link Director. It was just R 1 200, and it works well, but it's got it's faults. When I set up my home theatre, I'm going to get a PC. Do any output 5.1 Audio through the HDMI plug?

I'm looking at the Intel H57DD board, and the i5 661 chip in a CoolerMaster Elite 100 case with a 40 GB Intel SSD, and 2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM. Think the 150W PSU is enough? Will the audio and video output be good enough for a decent 5.1 Home theatre system? I get most of my content off the internet, and I bought a decent setup to enjoy it on, but what sort of PC is going to give me the best output. Do I need Dolby sound if I'm running audio over HDMI? What about optical SPDIF, the board has an optical digital audio output on the back?

What do you okes think?

Any 5000 sreies ATI card will pass the audio through its HDMI port. I dont know of any onboard GPUs that do this though
