Hi guys,

So I got an HD PVR on promo today and installed the decoder and all but then I realized I need 2 LNB's for the PVR part. So I got a twin lnb box for the dish and some cable. Gonna install it this weekend.

Just wondering if this is right?
Take off the old single channel LNB off the dish
Put the new twin lnb in the same spot and run the extra cable to the decoder?

Yip just watch the angle of the LNB it sits at an angle make sure you put the new LNB at the same angle then it will be fine.

^this

it's pretty easy, I think it took me about 10 minutes the last time I did it.

Awesome thanks, I was thinking I need to put it in the same angle.. And to think they wanna charge me 1.5K to do it. 3 times what the parts cost

Hi guys

I am also thinking of buying an hd pvr this afternoon.....

So am I understanding this correct ? My dish and cable installation (quite old. I am renting. The dish and cabling was there when I moved in 2 years ago) will probably not work and I need to do a complete new installation. Basically everything except the TV ??!!

I don't mind buying a PVR at R1500. That would be like buying a new(old) VHS machine, plug it in , follow instructions and you're good to go ! But if I have to dish out another R1500 for installation then maybe it's not so much worth it....?

Thanks.
Pierre

nope it should be fine (especialy if your curent signal is fine) to just swap the old lnb and just lay a second cable (if you want to be safe you can replace the old cable as well)
as above just make sure to place the new lnb exacly as the old one was

Thanks isie !

So if I understand correctly, the LNB is the thing at the centre of the dish ? And I need a new one ? Where can I buy these things ? Like HiFi Corp ? Then there must be 2 cables from the LNB to the decoder ?

Will the PVR not work without this ?

I just want to be able to record.

Thanks !

correct that thing at the centre is the LNB, you need to buy a Twin or dual LNB they sell them at makro / game / pick and pay hyper / ellies not sure if hifi corp have it though im sure they should have ti. price wise around R500.

and because you want to be able to record you need a twin lnb in simple terms (i hope this makes sense) a single lnb cant see both horizontal and vertical signals at the same time, and if you try and record a chanel on a vertical chanel while watching a horizontal chanel it wil lbomb out

Yes thanks that makes perfect sense !

Sorry I started almost the same discussion here :

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/452929-What-DSTV-PVR-to-buy/page2

...but that one is about costs, this one about installation...

What if I don't want to watch and record, but only record when not at home. Still need the twin LNB ?

wow deja vu :D
other dude asked the same questions
so copy and paste:
even if you not at home, the decoder will be on 1 chanel, and the recording will be on another chanel (even if its the same chanel If that made any sensce)
Unles you mean record with you VCR or DVD recorder, which though i have not tested Multichoice blocks you from doing this now
