I just found it amazing that HD is being marketed as an added feature when the HD Pvr lacks some of the more basic features of is predecessors. A new HD PVR? Oh happy days... how much money do they want us to spend after wrecking our budget on the previous "luxury" item?

As an HD-PRV owner I have to warn any potential buyers from not buying it. Yes I love HD. The picture quality if amazing. Watching sport in HD is really something else.

Having said all of that. At some point in time you will end up getting HD content somehow somewhere. But until DSTV don't bring out a new HD decoder I highly recommend that you dont go with the current one. It truly is a half baked product that gives more problems and causes more frustration for the end user.

There is not a day that goes by where I dont have to reboot the thing. Terrible but true.

Why is this a surprise?

MC NEVER sorted out the problems in the original PVR, even the most basic one such as being reliably able to record a whole program!

I suspect that they still have not achieved this!

Still running on my old Dualview decoder. Think I'll carry on waiting before upgrading. Hopefully, at some point, ODM will put a firm boot into Monochoice's butt.

perhaps this is a perfect opportunity to ask MultiChoice to give us scheduled updates in xml format, compressed, or just make their channel information display more than Now and Next on none multi choice hardware. Or just open it up.

I would expect these problems on OpenSource, since you can't really complain. But to get all these problems as a paying customer.... Not so sure.

As someone who 'upgraded' from the SD PVR to the HD PVR, all I can say is...MS Dos =>> MS Windows or (Reliable, dull screen =>> Unreliable, pretty screen)

ODM mentions on their FAQ page, that their decoders will support MPEG4 DVB S2, and that you will be able to buy it from a few shops. This (almost) implies that their hardware will be more generic, and not bound to their will (so to speak).

That would be nice, but in reality it is still up to consumers to give [Mo]noChoice the boot when an alternative PayTV service is available [hopefully ODM at some point later this year].

IOW ODM can only supply an alternative to [Mo]noChoice, ODM does not have the power to boot [Mo]noChoice's arse - that power rests with consumers who have to vote with their wallets.
