HD Ready Plasma versus Full HD LCD

was at samsung store at canal walk yesterday...c450 going for 7.5k..awesome picture..although the salesman said they dont have sd dstv..honestly how can you make a decision if they dont even have the input i will be using ..looked at the web and read good stuff on the tv though..looks good...although wouldnt mind it at 7k! :D... i aksed the salesman why they dont have dstv and he gave me some lame excuse...so i tell him wont be watching blu-rays whole day so the picture wont look so good...frustrating... oh and hopefully game brings some specials this week..the past 2 weeks have been disapointing..
 
Just a dumb question:

How can the samsung have a resolution of 1024x768 and still claim to be 16:9 aspect ratio??
 
The software in the display re-maps the image to display correctly.

But it means that the display doesn't have native Full HD resolution - I think that few of them do !
 
Fair enough,

but 1024x768 on 16:9 means the display doesn't even have HD ready resolution:

720p = 720*(16/9) = 1280 horizontal pixels (1280x720)

thus the samsung supports at most

1024/(16/9) = 576p ?

Are my calculations whack or is samsung trying a fast one?

Don't look at the resolution. It is still HD Ready, and still looks awesome. The pixels are a different shape than normal Tv's, but the only difference you will see is from PC screen. And who is going to use their Plasma as a PC screen?
 
I got the samsung plasma 42c450 R7499 from R8499, LCD 32B350 R3799 from R4399 and the sony 160GB dvd recorder HX780 R2699 from R3999. The 42C450 was R7499 same as catsdigital in Gauteng and Samsung Canalwalk (had no stock). The samsung LCD was as per Game's special price and the sony 160GB dvd recorder was same price as LG 160GB dvd recorder at R2699 (no stock of LG).
 
I have second thoughts about my HD LCD then I plug my laptop in and view RAW images.

Okay,

So I picked up the PS42C450 today for R 7,400.00.

At this moment I am NOT a happy customer :mad:

The unit has an extremely loud "buzzing" sound eminating from the screen. The buzz is more pronounced on "lighter" images, ie: its near quite on black.

This is going to drive me insane!!!!

Should I return it? I know that plasma's are more noisy by design, but hell this is going to drive me up the walls!
 
Take it back, my Sony plasma has no buzz that I can hear.

Someone that I know had a plasma that buzzed and it gave no end of trouble - ended up on the dump !

BTW : my Sony is a special high-altitude model that is pressurised for high altitude - because I live in Joburg.

I have heard that plasma displays pressurised for sea level often buzz at altitude and then overheat !

Check on Google - lots of stuff about this.

I also noticed this buzz emanating from my plasma - same model. Also uncertain about what to do. Don't seem to notice it after a while - maybe its my brain adjusting the buzz to background noise or that the background of most of what i watch is dark. I thought that these plasmas had no fans, can't understand the source of the buzz - I'm in the cape so I dunno if the altitude thing matters here? Will it disappear after some time - like a "break-in" thing? Didn't know that sony made any good plasmas, how do they compare to the samsungs and panasonics? Still love the picture quality on the samsung but don't really like the small "large" PIP picture, wish that it can be adjusted to be bigger.
 
No altitude issue in the Cape, unless you are on top of Matroosberg.

After my friends problems I was very careful about this - I bought the high altitude model of my Sony plasma - it's fine, no buzz !

I don't know whether there has been any developments on this altitude issue in the last few years. The problem is that plasma displays contain gas, and it should be pressurised for the altitude where you will be using it - and they typically come pressurised for round about sea level.

It's just a pity that one spends all this money on high end audio equipment, receivers and speakers and then a lousy buzz from the screen comes and ruins the whole show....

I am going to phone the store, will keep you posted on their response
 
It has to do with the power supply. It may need a tweak or 2 by the technician. Thats why you get the buzz in high bright scenes, and not the darker, cause it uses more power for the bright scenes. Just check your settings too, a plasma isn't blazing bright as an LCD, so don't try make it that way.
 
720p vs 1080p is negligible.

FWIW ... I bought a Samsung 50" 1080p set and wasn't happy with its overall performance ... I eventually paid a significant amount in on a Pioneer KURO HD ready 50" and could not be happier. The better quality panel blows the Samsung away. I could not see any resolution difference watching BluRays from 2.9m away on these 50" panels. People on this forum like to say stuff like: "HD ready is not worth it", "Nothing but 1080p", etc. Complete BS, I'm pretty sure not one of those okes have done a side by side comparison.

Pioneer made great plasmas... pity they done make them any more.
 
First thing I did when I got home today was switch on the TV and listen for the buzz. Guess what? There was none! switched the TV off and came back half an hour later and switched on again, and ... no buzz! Guess its the power supply thing that Wasp was talking about.

As far as pioneer and panasonics vs samsung, I think that the samsungs are better value for money than the panasonic, especially at the current prices and ranges in SA. It is a pity that pioneer stopped making plasmas, but then again their highend market was shrinking with other tech like LCD LED, AMOLED and 3D tv coming out, so I think they made the right move before it cost them too much.
 
I bought a 42" LG plasma yesterday HD ready. For me there is hardly any difference between HD ready and full hd on a scree that size. PLus at R6k it was a good price. I was origanlly going to take a Samsung 42" plasma, at R8k, but a saving of R2k was too much to pass up. Even with normal DStv my plasma looks great!

Cool... a lot of people on the UK forums say that LG plasmas have the best SD processing...
