I was recently told that the only benefit of buying a full HD TV would be when you watch blue ray dvd's. That DSTV doesnt broadcast in full HD. Is that true? I thought that the last olympics were broadcasting in full HD? Do we actually receive it in full HD or is it just salesman talk when you buy a new TV?

I read on here that DSTV broadcasts on 1080i not 1080p, so in a sense it might be true.

1080i vs 720p

Can you even still get HD Ready?

I'd go full HD. So what if you don't use 1080p now. You might in 6 months time?

I have some 1080p movies on my media center - the content is not out of reach at all.

HD ready is normally screens smaller 32" or less. You get Full HD for those but they generally cost more.

Yes a lot of plasmas are still HD Ready, you also do still get smaller LCD screens at HD ready resolutions. DSTV broadcasts in 1080i which isn't Full HD in the traditional sense, it still uses the same amount of bandwidth as 720p.
Depending on distance from the TV, size etc you might not be able to see the difference. I've had two HD ready TV's and three Full HD ones. 32" you won't honestly notice the difference between the two, might even push this to 43", but at around 46" you can start noticing it if you really look hard.

If you ever plan to plug a PC into your TV get Full HD.

Most sport is broadcast in 1080i

Not sure on the DSTV sports side, but it should be broadcast in 720p not 1080i. As 720p is a lot better for fast paced action and will have less ghosting.

Sure, but 1080 is a lot better for the Monochoice marketing department.

What makes the whole HD vs HD Ready situation even worse is when you see a TV thats marked as HD Ready, expecting 1280x720, which is what everyone is lead to believe is the supposed resolution for HD Ready, and then notice that the TV is actually 1366x768.

Then they announced Ultra HD which comes in 4k (3840×2160) and 8K (7,680 × 4,320). I can already see TV's marked as UHD Ready and Full UHD just to confuse us even more. I don't even want to talk about the possible Samsung portrait TV...
