Is there a difference between “HD Ready” and “Full HD”? If so, what would the better option be?

In its simplest terms yes there is...

Full HD refers to the resolution of 1920x1080 iirc...
HD Ready doesn't NECESSARILY mean its an HD set, but usually it means the set has a resolution of 1366x768

HD-Ready is simply a label that states that you TV can accept a high definition signal; what it finally displays the signal at is dependant on the resolution of the TV.

Full HD means that the TV can accept and display a resolution of 1900x1080

Full HD is obviuosly better, but is overkill and overpriced.
Unless you're buying at least a 60" Full HD TV and you watch BluRay 24/7 that's a different issue. There's also other considerations, such as Brand, whether it does 720p and whether or not it has HDCP.

My dad has this new thing that he asked me about and im like wtf...
coz im not sure if this is true or not. i dont believe so, coz it would be stupid and evil.
according to him lots of people in stores tell him that (im not etirely sure bout this but its something like this) when the HD conversion or whatever comes, that normal TVs wont work anymore. I told him that that doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but if its true then its just plain EVIL(to people who dont have money, etc). i said that maybe its just a sales thing, but he said that lots of guys from different stores told him that(unless he's making it all up and is just trying to justify a HD tv)

Anybody know anything about this?

I think someone along the line is getting digital broadcasting confused with HD TV.

IIRC When digital broadcast comes into play owners of older tvs will need a set top box in order to receive the digital terrestrial broadcasts once the analogue signal is switched off.

Yup - same everyone else says.

My set is HD ready, but a 480 panel. It accepts 480, 720 and 1080 signals and just downscales to fit my screen. I've got the HDMI ports as well. As far as I know, an HD Ready set must be able to accept all signals and have the HDMI ports.

that sounds like a better explination thanks bwana.
so what is this digital broadcasting? just different signals that they'll use to send out the broadcast?
and do you perhaps have an idea of when this will come into play?

also i think i should start my own thread regarding this coz im feeling like im going of course of the thread topic

I think there is a thread about this somewhere...

But roughly, SA is supposed to be done with the switchover either in 2011 or 2015 can't remember (doesn't really matter, we won't make that deadline)...

It is a different signal altogether, atm tv is distributed via analog signals, and they'll be switching to digital. Means they can cram more channels into the broadcasting spectrum

exactly Keeper....

damn used to watch that probgram everytime it came on, normally it was on fridays i think. and back then i didnt have a pc yet. just my tv game lol

Full HD or HD ready -adding to the discussion

Full HD is a higher pic resolution of 1080, which has over 2 million pixels, compared to standard "HD Ready" which is usually just over 1 million, so there is a noticeable difference on bigger panels. Some say Full HD is only noticeable on 40 inches and up screen. One other factor depending on screen size is that the difference can only seen between Full HD tv and HD tv ready when the screen are not further tan 8-12 feet away from the viewer.

lollies, i think i still have copies of CVG, Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamePro and Turbo Force...there's more, but cant recall right now...
