HD4850 vs 9600GT

risk melting the PCI-E slot!
I'm looking to buy one of these in a few days time. It will be abit hotter than my current card but melting the PCI-E slot is smoking cheese my friend

Off course I'm exxaggirating about the melting, but the card does not run as cool as a 9800GX2 or a 8800GT for example. The software on the test 9800GX2 states its idling at 55-degrees & load taking it to about 63-degrees, whereas the HD4850 idles at 89-91 degrees.

And it handles that just fine as it was designed to. I do not know of one of these cards to date that died due to heat related issues. My 4870 can run even hotter but at least it pushes all the hot air outside my case and does not drop the heat inside like the 4850s.

I actually like the heat in the winter months... to bad my mboard doesnt

The 4850 is a excellent card. The only reason not to buy one (and the reason I didn't) is that this card runs flippen hot. The one in our testing lab is so hot when the system is idle, that you can't even touch it. We're afraid of overclocking it and risk melting the PCI-E slot!

Wasn't this because of some driver bug that made the fan run at only 20%?

It got resolved didn't it?

The 4850's have a serious heat problem and i expect alot of complaints to start coming through when our summer is in full swing.

idling at 80 or 90 in winter means that when summer hits that card could idle well over 100. That would cause some concern if i owned one.

I'm not worried at all. The general feeling I'm getting is that these babies were designed to 1) run silent (hence the fan speeds being supposedly stuck at 20%) and to 2) take the heat. I've heard that it can handle in excess of 100 degrees easily and when it goes into those regions that the fan will begin to speed up in any case hence cooling it down again.

For those that are worried about the temps, you can set the fan profile at ~34% - you'll hardly notice the extra noise and it'll keep the card cooler. :)

Where can I get an ATi Radeon HD4850Pro for cheap (not online, in a shop)

I stay in the Kempton Park area...

Dude you wont find cheaper vga cards in a shop than you will online. I suggest you buy online and get the best prices.
I would imagine a website is bit cheaper than 20k rent a month so their bottom line will always be lower than a shop.

not optional, i don't have a card ATM...

So why can't you use an EFT?

Online does not always mean credit card in this country, most online stores accept an eft.

i got my xfx 9600 gt from computersonly for 1799, so depending where you are located, you can always go pick it up (seeing as you have no card)....allthough i am not sure what their prices are now, as i got mine on special

Hey guys

Thanks for all the replies. I haven't checked here for a few days. I just used Take2 as an idea, I know they are pricey and you can get things cheaper. They are easy to use as a comparison between products. :) I find their site user-friendly.

Anyway, I've heard good things about the HD4850 with the exception being the heat. As someone else mentioned, I think killadoob, it just makes me wonder how long a card like that will last running at those temperatures.

I'm not biased towards either AMD/ATI or Nvidia. I currently own a 6600GT that needs replacing and previously owned an ATI 9600XT which served me well.

I'd buy the HD4850 tomorrow if it wasn't for my doubts over the temperature that it runs at.

Is it a valid concern?

No... The card was made to run at that temps, also you can just up the fan speed, I think its runs stock at 35% percent...

So aslong as your case has good airflow you should be sourted...
