I wanted to post this just after 2am this morning already, but someone, *cough*, was updating/playing around with the forum software :p
In any case, here we go...

To celebrate this wonderful day, lets start off to see how the 4870 goes against the other cards on the market!

The 4870 OWNZ the GTX260!
Overall, the 4870 beats the 260 by 1.92%. Not much, but price wise, it will. GTX260 goes for about R5000+ here in SA, 4870 will come it at much lower.

The 4870 vs GTX280!
Overall the 280 beats the 4870 by 13.82%. Not much if you take in mind that the 280 goes for about +-R8000  here in SA. But the 4870 can be seen taking a heavy beating in Lost Planet in this review though.

You can have a look at this for yourself here: http://en.expreview.com/2008/06/24/first-review-hd-4870-and-hd-4850/

Albeit, it seems there is a error/problem with the website now and again :( - maybe it is just me. Try this link if the one above does not work ;)

If there are still problems, I'll see what I can salvage from my browser cache...

We need competition, without ATi, we still need to pay 3500 for 9800GTX, but if Nvidia can not produce cards with good performance/price ratio, We will probably pay like R3500 for 4850.

NVidia - They way it's meant to be played.
I'm not switching.

No one is forcing you to switch, but Nvidia&ATI loves having clients that think like you do. All they do is pop out a card, and people buy. Don't let them win...

@greylid It is a pleasure. I'm also upgrading soon, must still see for what I'll be going. The 9800GTX+ is also around the corner, 15/07, but the price will be higher than the 4850.

Ya but I dunno, I think the 4850 will be a better bang for your buck . . .
I was originally planning for a 9600Gt so a HD 4850 is stretching the budget a bit:D
haha, i might have to get a E2200 instead of a E4600 to afford the 4850:(

I have a 3870 it works great...

Will I be able to crossfire my 3870 with a 4870, I know about hybrid crossfire, but as far as I know it works with Crossfire between 2 cards and the onboard gpu, or one card and onboard. Also i know about 4way crossfire, so I assume a mixed cfire will be supported, or at least I hope so ;)

Is a "mixed" crossfire supported yet?

@Id13
Do you think an E2200 processor will be a bottleneck for the HD 4850?

Not really.

The higher the res, the less work is performed by the gpu. (except for physics).

My 8800GTS 320 XXX + E6420 performs better than a friend's 8800GTS 320 + E6750 at 16*12.

The cards nowdays are much more sohpisticated than the cpu's ou there.

Get a cheapish cpu, overclock it, get a good gpu, and with a nice monitor - you're sorted!!

Ye i think ille get the E2200 and HD4850 instead of the E4600 and 9600GT i was going to get...
And then OC the E2200 when i get a new motherboard..

@greylid I do not have enough experience imo to tell when a card will Bottle neck a certain CPU - I still need to dive into that topic, not that I can find much info on that topic...

I get a connection failure when trying to view those pages :(

They were already taking strain from all the people visiting their site from early this morning. 'Dead' now for me aswell.

Here I have uploaded some pics from my browser cache - I'll see what I can fish out of it and upload...

@ASS_SAZiN` Sometimes crossfire can work with different cards, but it makes sense that Series X won't work with Series Y, cause the older series will be holding the new powerful card back a bit. That is how I see it in any case.

Ive read somewhere that AMD are trying to get 3000series and 4000series to work in Crossfire... Jeez thatll be insane!!! All it will do is sync the memory clocks and I think core clocks.

BTW MyBroadband forum ftw!! you guys give nice replys and respectfull comments here compared to the stuck up SGS forums. Nice guys

First Review: HD 4870 and HD 4850
June 24th, 2008 by Jeff AMD, Graphics, Hardware, NEWS

Final words

The Good:

So, numbers can talk for itself. With the price tag $199(HD 4850) and $299 (HD 4870), RV770 is the BEST bang for the buck. Compare to GTX 260, A $299 only HD 4870 is a smarter choice. Yes, using this kind of word seems quite biased, but if you read all numbers from our review you will see my point.

Compare to GTX 260, HD 4870 is only 3/4 of its price while test items show the card have almost the same firepower!

HD 4850’s rival is 9800GTX, and we can see while their price keeps the same, HD 4850 have more than 15% leading.

The Con:

But, RV770 also have lot’s of weak points. First, the card is HOT, i am afraid that if you are not going aftermarket coolers or water the card can not stand long.

Second, RV770 TDP is quite terrible. HD 4870 in stress mode almost can catch up with GTX 280. Is it still a AMD card? And the second Gen PowerPlay is not as good as AMD saids, seems can not lower the clock effectively.

The huge impact of Radeon HD 4800 series force NVIDIA drops price for the Geforce 9800GTX to $199, and introduces the GeForce 9800 GTX+ at $233 which supports PhysX or other CUDA programs. However, it can’t threaten HD 4850 on price or performance with that price. HD 4850 has flooded out everywhere and HD 4870 is just around the corner. It will be launch on June 25th or July 8th.

Besides, we have benchmarked two or three HD 4800 in CrossFireX, and the the review is coming soon.
