HD5000series vs GTX 480

Ok hold up a second, you say pretty pointless? Did you read the conclusion though, here is a snippet:

Looking at the GeForce GTX 480's performance, the results are certainly positive, as there's no doubting the GeForce GTX 480's ability to crunch graphics. It has reclaimed the title of the world's fastest single GPU card from ATI and by some margin too, seeing that it can be as much as 50% quicker than the Radeon HD 5870 in some tests. In fact, it's so quick that it is enough to even give the Radeon HD 5970 something to think about. The GF100 is nothing less than a monster GPU, but given that it is nearly half a year late to the competition, would you expect anything less?

The card really does look a winner to me. If i had the choice i would buy it rather than ati. No i am not a fanboy but it looks a monster. Price well i am sure that may drop.
 
Yeah, its a huge disappointment. Although it's the fastest single GPU card now, I would not buy it. The temps and power consumption are terrible.

For roughly the same money I would take a 5970 any day.
 
While we're on the topic, I trust anandtech above all others, but yeah, the performance you get isn't worth the power consumption, heat, noise and money.
 
Do they have DirectX 11? If so I'll get a Nvidia 400 series when they reduce the power consumption...
 
It really does not give the 5970 something to think about, and 50% quicker than the 5870?! Perhaps for a few seconds here and there in Unigine, but not in any game. And power consumption will probably only go down in the next revision with a die shrink. That really is all that Nvidia can do in that regard. But then ATI will have done a die shrink 6 months ahead of them and retaken the fastest single GPU crown. Big loss for the green team this time round
 
i have to agree with archer here... i was a fanboy of Nvidia but logically, it seems they like to cater for the rich boys lately. unfortuantly here in ZA the majority of gamers are on a budget and if you look what ATi can offer, its just realistic to go for best "bang for your buck" and all round quality, which ATi has provided and i think they will even do a better job in the near future
 
I also read on my gaming that this card is retailing from 6700-7700 rand online with our local retailers..which is quite a bit more than a 5970.. which uses less power and is quite superior in 90% of the tests,and even at those temps and price I doubt they will be releasing a dual GPU card anytime soon,and if they did,it would probably have to have its own PSU

Ok you know what we need some perspective on this.

1: Nvidia cards have ALWAYS been hotter and higher power consumption than ATI's cards. It's just the way they design things.
2: At the $400+ level, 20% price difference for 10+% performance improvement is actually quite acceptable. The $50-300 level of gfx cards is very price sensitive, but $400+ is enthusiast bracket, and you get smaller returns for the money. 480 IS faster than 5870 - in FC2 it totally demolishes it, and I feel that future (DX11 optimised) games will see the difference getting bigger.
3: 250w vs 188w isn't THAT great of a difference. Gamers who can afford the card can also afford a decent PSU.
4: South African prices are not US prices. Early adopters will pay whatever they need to, but if you wait for supplies to go up and prices to fall you'll find 480 will become a much more attractive option.
 
Lol, I didnt even look at the SA prices! In the US/Europe the 5970 is a bit more expensive than the 480, but you are right - over here there is no difference between the 480 preliminary prices and the 5970. Nobody in their right mind would buy the 480 unless something drastic happens with its price.
 
Why not make this comparison or disision when :

a) Nvidia actually proiduce any of these cards
b) You hear from actual people who own these cards.
 
hahahaha, yus that is pathetic from nvidia shessh. Yes the card is the fastest atm but come on. 90 degrees at idle?!?!? must be smoking crack cocaine if you think thats okay for a GPU.
WP ATI, well played.
 
Give it till end of Q2 when the refresh of the 5XXX comes out. That will be the competition aimed at the GTX 400, since you can't buy one yet and probably won't be able to for a while.
 
I was a nvidia fanboy a while back in the 8000 series, damn good cards, but like all things... the swing swings... back and forth! :)

Just seems to me that nvidia are trying too hard here, and they have produced a card that is indeed fast, but fails in all other areas. No denying this.

Same with Intel and AMD, Intel have a faster CPU but in terms of bang-for-buck its really a no-brainer... 965 BE FTW :)
