So I'm looking to get a new HDD, hopefully soon and I thought I'd ask for some advice here before just blindly going out and buying any old thing. I should have a budget of between R600-R800 for it, so if you chaps could give tips on what brand, size, where to get, etc for that price, it would help a lot.

Do it. The Samsung 1Tb and the Seagate 7200.12 1Tb drives are well-priced and well-rated currently. If you can find a Western Digital model for the same price, it would be worthwhile as well. All 3 brands are currently equivalent in their quality (IMO!)

Though the people I know that work in the supplier technical support departments, they say they are seeing a higher proportion of seagate drives coming back the past year than they used to. This came shortly after seagate dropped they warranty from 5 years to 3 years.

That just makes me uneasy about them. Personally I've gotten back lot of 7200.11 drives. about 30-40%.

That's probably due to the well-documented 7200.11 firmware problem. Since then the 7200.12's have been well praised. Seagate regained my trust

i'd go for a WD or a samsung - never a seagate.

whoa ......... wonder what the catch is for that price though :o

No catch bru - I've got one of those drives and they're great.
Also from kalahari.
Order today, as it's the deal of the day and really worth it.

PmP has one as well and a few others here that have had no issues with them.
That price includes free delivery ;)

Not only the firmware issue. Drive clicking, essessive vibration resulting in bad sectors, SMART failures. All sorts of issues.

Its almost like Seagate is making their desktop drives in the Maxtor factory

Aren't you close to an Esquire MH? They've got a special on Seagate 1TB (v.12) drives till Saturday. R775 Incl VAT.

I'll only have the money at month end :( And I dunno where the Esquire is, I should find out anyway.
