HDD crashed again ... sigh. Some advice please!

That really depends on what the problem is.

Depends entirely on what is wrong. The commercial data recovery tools I've used will not write anything to a corrupted drive.

Most people don't turn their computer off, then immediately back on, then immediately off again, then immediately back again, all day, every day. Of course unless you have old drives or you've disabled the feature they'll be powering themselves down and the OS will be as well to conserve power. If I were going to spend R1800 per year I'd rather just replace the drives every year (even though they'll last years being turn on and off).

No but most people don't turn off the power saving feature which spins your hard drive down every 15 minutes.

The reason my pc is on 24/7 for around half the month is because I use it to work at home all day, and I have webafrica download plus (100gb) which I can only use between midnight and 6am, so that is when I leave my downloads going.

Also, most hard drives when they fail, fail in the first 6 months of their life I've seen
