Guys, a strange 20th century question for 2016. My dad still uses a VHS recorder that he connects to a really old DSTV decoder via an RCA output. He has about five of other people's old decoders to replace his decoder when it dies, but his VHS is on its last legs.
He wants to know whether he can use a harddrive-based DVR to continue recording pretty much as he does now, since he is not keen on buying a new decoder and the extra R85 per month for PVR.
I've been looking for a secondhand HDD DVR, but haven't been able to find one in South Africa. So, do you know of a secondhand HDD DVR that I can buy locally?
Alternatively, I've seen many secondhand ones on eBay for between R1,000 and R2,000 from both European and American sellers. Is there any reason why these won't work locally (cables, signals, etc.)
Any advice is welcome. I'm way out of my depth here. I don't even have a television, let alone DSTV.
