I have a Lenovo 3000 N100 notebook with a 80GB Toshiba HDD 1.5GB Memory. For all intense and purpose this system should be flying but its not. I checked out the IDE and the HDD is on PIO mode. I know this slows down the data access on the HDD. Is there any other way of fixing this problem excluding formating the HDD. I have backed up the HDD just incase but I really want a easier way of fixing this problem.:(

Using XP or Vista?

I'm not sure bout Vista, but I know that on XP u can set it to run UDMA-5 or whatever through device manager. Problem is that every time XP encounters an error, it reverts down a level. There's a whole protocol it uses to decide when to switch down and if it should attempt switching up, but the short version is that after a certain criteria is met, you're stuck with slower access (unless you're willing to get your hands a little dirty)

That's my experience at least.

Your notebook: running 1 x 1024MB and 1 x 512MB? Does it support dual-channel memory? If it does, then you probably aren't getting it (dual-channel memory, as I understand, takes effect only when you have the same size memory modules in each bank, and when you've enabled it (if it requires enabling) )
