Easy Recovery Pro worked fine for me when I lost 200GB from my external.

Its the best, lost 300GIG. Got everything back, after a format was done.
Although it cant be recovered on to the HD being recovered.

With any recovery software you cannot recover to the same drive, it has to be recovered to another drive. I had to recover 40GB at a time and then copy it back to my external due to my internal HD being of a smaller capacity. Took about 2 hours to recover and copy 40GB at a time, but at least everything was recovered successfully.
Hold on, before you start running intense software scans on a drive that could be failing you need to know what the problem is.
What exactly is wrong with it? You say it's detected in XP and then 'goes off'. Does it power off? Does the drive disappear from My Computer?
Best first step is to check the SMART values. Download HDDScan and run a SMART report and see if there are any values that are red or yellow.
Don't just run a scan with any old software before you know what's wrong with it as you could kill it altogether. Give as much info as possible.
