HDD vs SSD

I'm pretty sure it's not . . . and that it will void your warranty the instant you install it. I've got a few more months left on mine - that's one of the reasons I'm holding off.

Apple approved... LOL... I get the point... what I meant was it was ordered for him by the Apple store genius and will be fitted for him by them. The "luxury" of his warranty has long since wained thus he can afford the "modification". It REALLY has made a world of difference to his machine... breathed a new lease of life into it... that SSD... and an additional 8GB of RAM.

Did you test the system without the massive RAM upgrade?

Hi Fudzy

Indeed... yes... he used it with the stock RAM and new SSD for close on 3 or 4 weeks while he waited for the Apple RAM to arrive at the Cape Town store... so had a very good indication of the before and after responsiveness. It really is impressive... just takes everything in its stride... and perfectly stable.

Sweet, I was going to say 8GB probably would make FDD seem faster :p

The SSD was / is fast ... the extra RAM now means that his multitasking applications are just much more responsive... no lagging or hourglass catch-up.

Back to his SSD...

The Windows Experience Index is not really anything to go by, but it jumped from around 5 with the stock Apple 5400rpm HDD to 7.8 with the Corsair SSD. His MacBook gets to Windows desktop from power on in 11 seconds... Outlook, instantly open, Word, Photoshop etc... all instant... no longer than 3 seconds splash screen delay. Indesign CS6 is the most impressive... with all the plugins and such it used to take a good minute to settle down and become usable... now it is around the 15 seconds mark. In everything he uses daily, there is almost no waiting. Resume from hibernation in around 5 seconds... sleep instantaneous.

Jaw dropping.

EDIT: When he 1st got the SSD, he would just boot the MacBook, open Outlook and perform a couple of search queries, do a few SQL database queries, launch Indesign and edit a huge file, and then reboot... for around 20 minutes... repeating the sequence.

Each time he would just look around with a glazed look of bewilderment on his face... and repeat to me "OMG... do you know what this means... do you really understand the implication of this... this is a dream... this cannot be real... OMG". :D

When my iPad gets too old I'm going to replace it with an Ultrabook mit SDD speed!

Damn, I'd love a decent Ultrabook - something like the new Samsung Series 9. *drool* I just need to create a serious need for it. :p

Well good thing I don't use an OS that takes up a Terbyte.

120gigs is enough for my OS and a few games and apps.

The reason i posted the Agility link is because it's a bloody decent SSD at a bloody decent price.

and btw

3.5k!!

Guess mechanical drives are expensive too. So you're just not gonna buy anything ;)

Don't get me wrong I WANT a SDD, I just know that 128GB just won't suffice. I'm hedging my hesitation on a steep price decline soon, if you look at previous storage mediums a price drop should be imminent. Per GB a 3TB HDD is a lot cheaper per byte than a 2TB, would have thought the same applied to SDDs.

I would also love one, and while I know that I could force myself to squeeze everything into a smaller space so that I could use one as my primary drive, I am just not sold on doing that given the high cost of owning one of these things.

Until you do own one.

For a grand it's not an expensive tester.

Just do it ;)
