HDMI audio problem

What's the point of going Bluray (and presumably HD) if you aren't going to watch it in ****ty Stereo using ****ty cables?

The only way in this case to make it happen would be to use audio outputs on the TV itself...if it has those.

Otherwise take back the Bluray player and get one that is also a sound system like the Samsung ranges with HDMI outs (and preferably INs so you can connect the DSTV to your sound system).

Yes, in a perfect world I would get that samsung HDMI surround sound system, I would also get a 55" Samsung LED LCD TV, DSTV PVR etc. But if I could afford all that, why would I buy the Cheapest Bluray on the market??

Point was that you might as well stick to DVDS if you aren't doing all the rest.

I don't agree.

Just because I can't afford a 7 course meal at a top restaurant doesn't mean I should eat only dry bread.

The Solution isn't perfect, but it is better than going back to stupid DVD's

Serious question from someone who hasn't used physical media in a long time: what makes DVDs stupid to you, that BR solves?

Nope. A better analogy would be this. You bought a good 28 days aged fillet steak, then you grind it up, mix it with bread and make meatballs from it...

Okay. I read the thread now. I see you are at least getting HD. That is probably enough reason to get the BluRay over DVD. Ignore my comment above, I thought you had neither surround nor HD.

This doesn't quite work like a 7 course meal where you could at least have the first three courses if you can't afford the other four.

But I figure the cheapest system with sound would have made more sense probably.

But to each their own.

I'm really not at all interested in playing bluray discs or DVD discs, my main reason for getting it is it can play practically any format video file. So far I've yet to come across any that it refuses to play. Mkv, HD mp4 etc that refused to play on even expensive DVD players play fine with this.

That is reason enough.

Problem is, when I bought the darn thing I never anticipated that it wouldn't work with my current Hifi.
Had I known that I probably would have bought one with sound. But seeing as my TV doesn't support HDMI ARC (audio return channel) either, that would not have worked in any case.

Yeah the HDMI related upgrade cycle is a painful and often expensive one.

Largely because the standard isn't a standard like you would expect.

Not the initial stuff with only pass through and no ARC.
