I was just wondering, some of the new gfx cards are HDMI enabled (with 5.1 sound) but then they only have the DVI port input at the back.

To be able to get full HDMI features must there be a HDMI port at the back of the card and obviously one on your monitor/tv?

Or do you still get all the features when you have a DVI port at the one end of the cable that you plug into the gfx card and a hdmi port you plug into your HDMI enabled monitor?

Hope that makes sense.

yes, dvi-d goes to hdmi just fine, minus the audio of course

better card with a full blown hdmi connector on the back feature an internal audio cable, which you connect to the spdif header on the motherboard...the graphics card then takes this audio and sends it out over the hdmi port.
it is not a killer feature though, chances are if you have a tv with hdmi, you also have a decent surround audio setup, so will use the audio seperately, hence have no need to send the audio over the hdmi cable in the first place

Ah okay, so hdmi is basicly dvi-d with audio. So the image quality isn't better with HDMI then it is with DVI?

lcd tv with no hdmi port

please tell me something - i have a sansui lcd 40" (sv-40lcd) with no hdmi port but it does have an dvd-i port. is there any way i can convert from an hdmi source (say from new hdpvr) to the dvi-d input or do i have to chuck this stupid tv away and get an hdmi tv??

thanks

Does the TV support HDCP over the DVI input? If so, then you can use it, but you'll need to run audio cables separately. If not, then you won't get a signal over DVI.

i am so sorry - i dont know what that means? how do i find out? the only ref to this in the manual is in the trouble shooting section under 'the screen shows snow or black patterns and reverts to a clear picture' to which the action is: 'the problem only occurs with DVI input when an abnormal signal is issued during an auth process for a high-bandwidth digital content protection (hdcp) compatible device. while it may vary depending on the device, the screen reverts to normal within a short time.'

i ASSUME this means it does have it.

also currently with my pvr, the sound goes through my LG sound system anyway - so i guess this is do-able?

thanks in advance.

so this is a quote from looooong ago... but I'll answer it now :D

HDMI 1.3 allows for a much wider colour space than DVI (up to 48 bits vs 24 bits) but that requires that the source and the screen support it. (Google xvYCC for more info)

Other than that, the video signal is the same.
