With all the good deals you guys find on a daily basis maybe you can give me some assistance.

I'm looking for an HDMI amp for my home theater, it must do audio and video with surround over HDMI unless someone can advise me on a better way to do it.

I don't have a hell of a lot to spend and also don't mind buying 2nd hand should it be in good nick with a warranty.

Just google South Africa for +receiver +HDMI and you will find lots. Like Sony..etc. Try Makro, Game and the usual's

What is your budget
What speakers/HT system?
What TV/Screen LCD you have?

I have a PS3, HD PVR and a 42" Samsung plasma that is unfortunately a few years old and only 480P. Also have a set of Mission bookshelf speakers with center and woofer. Once the amp is done the screen will got to 600hz 50" LG and the front speakers will get upgraded to Jamo's.

Budget is between 3 and 4K.

The plasma is actually fine for now so probably upgrade the amp and speakers and the Plasma at a later date.

Main reason for amp upgrade is my current amp doesn't do HDMI and I want to standardise all interconnects and set myself up for the future.

Have a look at this amp

http://www.catsdigital.co.za/sony-str-dh500-home-theatre-a-v-receiver-black-.html

Its about R3500.00 its got 3 HDMI inputs

Things to keep in mind I don't think this receiver will decode Doby True HD or DTS HD the two sound formats that Bluray comes with but your PS3 will decode those don't really need it

Just make sure you can select a different sound source to HDMI for your DSTV PVR since the sound comes from the opticle cable and not the HDMI
If you looking for an amp to decode these then you going to pay over R6000.00

For Best prices try the Sony Shops the one in eastgate is always cheaper than any other shop

That is exactly what I'm looking for, I'm upgrading my trusty old Sony STR DB940 that I've had for ages.

Oh yes, I'm in CPT so Easgate is out of the question;)

I also had one of those great amp

I upgraded to the 2400ES professional series but that was R8000.00

Just look for a sony shop you can more than likly get that amp for R2999.00 from there just test it our and see if its what you want and don't forget about the sound source for your HD PVR i had an issue with that when I was looking for amps

You must be able to set the amp to get sound from the opticle fibre cable and get video from the HDMI

Only drawback I see there are the 5.1 channels as opposed to the future 7.1 channel systems. Believe me it makes a difference in the sound stage. Other than that there seems to be no issue.

I would recommend going to cats and let them show/demo options in that price range, select what you prefer and "sounds" best to your ear then "shop" around for that model at the best price before committing yourself.

Look at the codecs like DTS HD MA and DD True HD as well as you said you're looking at the future and are interested I gather in BluRay titles.

Never checked! Are the SONY (own) distribution shops actually well priced? Interesting!

The PS3 will decode these then pass them onto the amp via HDMI so you don't really need to decode these on the amp it just saves a bit of cash that feature will add another R3000.00 onto the price

But its good if you get them to test this for you on a Demo and see what you think

How long are you planning on having the amplifier?

A 5.1 system now (cheaper) is more than adequate and you can upgrade in 2-3 years when something else is out? I've heard a few 5.1 systems that'll put 7.1 to shame

To tell you the truth I have my 2400es which is 7.1 running on 5.1 mode for the pure reason I don't have space for the additional speakers and I really don't have complaints

5.1 is more than adequate, I don't have a large lounge for extra speakers and only use my fronts/center/woofer anyway.

I can't seem to find a Sony store in or around Cape Town anywhere.
