Hi guys, I've got a NVidia 9600GT graphics card with 1 x dvi and 1 x hdmi port, problem is, my LCD's force me to use dvi/vga connectors. Now I recieved a hdmi/dvi converter and bought a hdmi cable yesterday. I've been doing some reading and it seems that the comments made would suggest that the converter is meant to convert DVI to HDMI.

My LCD does start up with the converter and cable, but I'm getting no red signal from the pc. I've tested he LCD on my work pc and it's fine.

Now for the question: Can this assembly be used in reverse? aka. HDMI to DVI? If not, is that why red is lost in the conversion?

Yes. HDMI and DVI are electrically compatible. The only downside is that DVI does not carry audio information (while HDMI does), so you would lose that.

Thanks sn3rd. Losing audio is fine.

TheRift: I'm actually trying to convert hdmi to DVI, so no, I dont need the HDMI, its just what the card has.

Ah, ok, I misunderstood. Didn't spot the idea that you want to run dual monitors. :)

Does the documentation not say anything? Does sound like running it in reverse is dodgey.

Tried updating the driver software, but couldnt see any new features in the program. If I understand correctly the converter I've got is dvi-d, but with 6 pins not there in the centre rows.

These pins are for data4+ and data4- , data 5+ data 5-, data 3+ data 3-.... now it would seem to me that missing 1/2 of the data pins on a digital connector would be ..... well, is that the problem?

Gonna try a different cable tonight, a buddy has one spare.
