hey there, i wanted to install a hdpvr in the flat i live in when im at work in zululand, so i called a service agent in ulundi askin for a price. he bowled me over with a whooping R3300 for the for the HDpvr + R1800 for installation!! I dnt knw much about the costs but i think thats ludicrous since i do have an existing installation.

how much did you guys pay for installation?? i think i could pick up a HDpvr from game for around R2500 and was thinkin about doin the installation myself :D is it difficult though? I do have a little know how...if you guys have a tut that would be great or do you recommend i get done by the proffesionals??

Do you have an SD-PVR or dual view decoder (i.e. two LNB cables into your decoder) at the moment?

If so, it is pretty easy to self install. You just need a multiswitch (2 in to 4 out) and four flyleads with F-connectors.

2-4 Multiswitch is around R400, cables less than R100. If you buy your decoder at Makro for R2199, the total is around R2700.

If you don't have a dual view installation, it may be more complicated. You'll need a different LNB on the dish, and if it is a communal dish it may get very complicated.

damn, i have single view...:( dnt know about my dish either! its looking like a i need a tech to do this. but still, R1800...thats just madness

With a single LNB, it is still possible to watch HD, but you won't be able to record other channels at the same time. You'll still need a multiswitch or a splitter because you need to have an input into 2 tuners on the HDPVR (Tuner1 and Tuner 4), Tuner 4 does all of the upgrades and EPG.

Had single view with my own dish, did a self install.

All I needed was a SatCR LNB (or UniCable LNB)

Use the Sat CR/Unicable connection on the new LNB and connect other end of the cable to LNB-1 port on the HDPVR.

Mark the current position of you old LNB before removing it to make sure your new one are aligned correctly.

All 4 tuners works correctly: 1x view, 2x record and 1x for Electronic Program Guide.

Was quoted between R600 and R 1 400 for the SatCR LNB. ;-(

wow, thanks chopsuey. so, let me get this right, i need:
1x Sat CR/Unicable LNB
1x cable
then follow ur directions. any idea where i can buy this stuff from in dbn??

Only SatCR LNB, used my current installed "single view cable".

Some decoder parameters must be setup, but MC helpdesk should be able to help you. (Network=Other, LNB Mode=SatCR, Do firmware upgrade)

Tip: You could use the "normal" output, opposed to Unicable output, on the SatCR LNB and connect it to the single view decoder to make sure your LNB are aligned correctly. Then connect cable to LNB SatCR output and to HDPVR. Switch off decoder when changing cable connection, otherwise you might get a slight sting/shock.

See arf9999 link. I bought from the same guys in CT, the cheapest I could find and they seemed clued up ;)

NB: This setup only works if you using your own dish... not one that is shared with the whole building.

sorry to sound like an absolute nub, but wat do you mean by "aligned"...regardless thanks for all the info

btw, i do have my own dish.

LNB alignment: The LNB position relative to the dish. When the LNB are lightly clamped to the dish, it will be able to rotate. Normally at the correct position, the cable will exit the LNB at around 4 o'clock. This alignment is critical, to ensure you have a usable signal.

As I said before, mark the current position of the LNB (I made some pen markings on the clamp holding it) and then install the new one at exactly the same position.

Have a look at your current installation, it should hopefully clear up my post a bit ...

PS: Search these forums, there are a lot of info regarding DSTV self installs.

Is a 2-6 multiswitch needed for Xtraview (1110 + HDPVR) ?
If so does only 1 line go to the 1110? Is the 6th output not used and only needed for HDPVR & SDPVR Xtraview?

Did a self install - had the SD PVR (dual LNB) + new HD PVR
Cost was:
HD PVR - R2499
2 - 6 Multiswitch R450
New amplified splitter box R400 (HD PVR RF output is terrible compared to SD PVR - this is for the feed to the bedroom)
New Ellies Remote Wizard - R450 (The old one is not compatible with the new PVR remote and I gave up on the TV link contraption as they are junk)
Total around R3799.

Thanks Arf

Does anyone know how network settings differ on the HD-PVR to a normal decoder?
I share a communal dish & had specific settings for networks 2 to 5 to get all the channels, now with the HD-PVR when i enter in those settings i dont get some channels.
Additionally the communal dish doesnt transmit network 6 which apparently has 3 channels on it, one is ESPN classic, if MNet HD is one of the others i'm gonna be seriously bleak & petition for them to invest in another R10k transmitter

Oh, and 1 more. I thought i had 2 LNB lines coming in but one is just a loop to the room, so will a SatCR do the trick to get 4 lines or does it have to be connected at the dish?
