Hi Guys

Im new here, been lurking for a while :erm: . Great forum this I must say, very informative;)

Regarding the thread, I have recently taken out a 2gb data contract with a Galaxy tab from Mtn.
My only problem is the coverage where I reside.

90% of the time I am stuck with EDGE. There are a few areas in my house where i have a H+/3G but the speeds are worse than EDGE.

On the coverage map the town is almost full red with a small part that is yellow.I happen to be in the small yellow part with plenty of red around me :(

Can anybody advise me what to do?

I have sent an email to [email protected] but they have not been very helpful and dont want to give me a reason why there is no proper 3G coverage.

Thanks

#EDIT: Vodacom and CellC has full coverage in the area

I have the same problem with MTN. I logged some calls a few years back and MTN sent someone out from JHB to check on the signal etc. He basically said I was in a dip and there was not much MTN could do to help me. He did, however, supply me with two antennaes from Poyntings...one a flat mulitidirectional and the second a directional Yaghi. Also some cabling and some inductive pads that you place your phone or modem on to improve the signal. The multi-directional antennae was useless but I have finally put up my directional Yahgi on a 2m pole on top of my chimney aimed at the nearest MTN tower. I now get 3G WCDMA connection on my modem though speeds are only around the 1Mbs rate.
You can ask MTN if they can do something for you....I have seen some MTN stores here handing out antennaes to customers...I dont know if they had to pay for them though.:)

I know that pointing charge you for their product out the door, but if my customers can benefit from an arial i give them one free of charge.

@Voldermort
Hahaha , I didn't even see the spelling error. Will send a pm shortly.
@Billwill, I was thinking about something like that but not too sure if it will work

You will probably find yourself on EDGE more than anything else with MTN, since I got and HSDPA capable phone a few months ago I have found that I probably get an EDGE signal about 80% of the time, all around the Northern suburbs, and I never see anything other than EDGE at home, but our suburb has notoriously bad signal on MTN, Voda, CellC and even iBurst (in my household I have all 4 of those) I do have an external antenna set up for CellC which works like a bomb, without that though even CellC with their 900 Mhz signal is crap

See our suburb has fairly good 3g coverage, vodacom on my cellphone is excellent n my sister has cell c wit no complaints.
From what I hear mtn is quite good as well. Some neighbours have mentioned problems to me as well.

Sent from my GT-P7500 using Tapatalk over EDGE :(

I just want to confirm. My MTN Speeds are Sooooo slowww.

I tested it on the same modem 21mbit modem. I change the simcard to Vodacom (speedtests say around 9-14mbit downstream, and 2mbit upstream)

Change simcard back to MTN, then run speedtest and i get around 1mbit download speed, 400kbps upload speed.

The above test was run at 3 different locations in CPT (Bellville, Pinelands CPT and 3rd location Waterfront)

We also ran a test with the Cell-C SImcard. Cell-C got nice speeds of 6-10mbit down, and 2mbit upstream speeds.

In all cases we could not see on the downstream more than 1.2mbit on the MTN Simcard.

Can someone from MTN please let me know whats going on. or am i the only person seeing this pattern ?

I get all the networks with a reception of 33 percent. Sometimes 31. All of them here avg 30 to 50 percent signal strength depends which leg i lift up first.

But when I was on the mtn network the first problem I got was the thing throttling down to 3g not staying on hspda or huspa. Then it started with the edge stuff and sometimes it showed a nice fat R for roaming.
All I did was removed the software. All of it and used mdma first and then moved on to mwconn to connect most of devices with one program. The software they release can't keeo it connected to 1 tower it will keep on acting from data of the centre. If you sit between two of them and one is 3g it will pass you left and right like a rugby ball. So try software other than what the data providers gave you.

what improvement did you get did you get doing this?

I dnt think those settings will work for the tab.
The only way i can see around this is to get a booster (if it works)
