Hi Guys

So I have a question that i need help with. Its a toyota with after market head lights. The lights have a main bulb and park lights.

The park lights are fine on both sides at all times. The right side main bulb doesnt come on when i have normal lights on but switches on when i have brights on which is weird to me.

The 3 possible faults are wiring, bulb or fuse. Anyone has any ideas? I would rather not have to test all 3.

How many bulbs are there? Many times the high & low beams are integrated into the same bulb. If it's only a a single bulb then the low beam portion could be buggered. Easy way to test is to swap the left & right bulbs around and see if it still behaves the same on the left side.

Bulb blown. There are 3 wires going to two elements, one return or negative, one for high beam and one for low beam. Looks like the low beam element is blown. Sometimes the bulb can be replaved other times the whole lamp has to be replaced depends what type you have.

I agree. There are 2 elements, one for high and one for low beam, the low beam element is probably blown, just replace the bulb. Had the same issue, went to Toyota, and the salesman said that even taxi's buy the original bulb, lasts much longer, and the price difference is not that much. I think the bulb cost around R100 (that was 2 years ago).

Necro and thread hijack. I have headlight issues on my Aygo. Same symptoms as OP.

Checked, it's not the fuse. Could it possibly be the bulb? Would hate to pay a guy if it's a simple fix.

Swop the bulbs around and see if the problem moves
Thanks for that. So if it moves, then it's the bulb. And if it doesn't, then it's something else?

Still very nooby but I want to do stuff like this myself.

Pretty much.

And while you replace it yourself might as well upgrade and buy some Osram Nightbreaker Plus bulbs.

Odds are once you take it out it will already be obvious and you might not even need to swop it.

I really would have expected the Aygo to have a light or information display to say a bulb is dead.

Why would you expect that from an Aygo?

It's the old Aygo so ja not many fancy information lights/display.

I see there is a night breaker "Unlimited" at takealot. Worth the extra R150?

Hmm not sure. They change their bloody branding every year.

Best to first confirm it is the bulb.

What’s the total cost? Might be worth it.

I recall I paid R280 or so for my last pair of H7’s.

Actually gooi the link because I need some new ones for high beam anyway.

I will confirm it's the bulb first yes.

Probably not worth it and might very well need replacement sooner if it’s working too hard which makes it more expensive in the longer term.

But I’ll have a scratch on their website tomorrow to see actual lumens comparisons and maybe see some reviews.

Nice to know Takealot can supply this kind of thing now.

The link I posted was for H7 bulbs, the H4 is R335 @ takealot or R275 directly from the supplier.

Ok so i have established that it's definitely the bulb at fault. I couldn't actually see the fault as it looked fine to my untrained eye, but I swapped it around as suggested.

Side note, anyone trying to do this with a 1st Gen Aygo, you better have tiny and strong hands. Prepare to curse and possibly injure yourself, because there is literally no wiggle room.

Still doesn't sound as bad as my car. I have to remove the battery, airbox and relocate the fuse box if I want to get to the passenger side bulbs or remove the windscreen washer reservoir, coolant bottle and move the radiator hose if I want to replace my driver side bulbs.

That said, the entire headlight unit comes out with three 10mm bolts so that is the route I take :p
