Heat pump, Good Idea?

Doesn't a warmer pool cause algae to go rampant?
Yes, you have to pay more attention to the water quality when you're heating it.

We're not really talking about heat pumps for pool heating here though, mainly for just for household hot water.

Stiebel Eltron rep just got back to my email, new wifi models are arriving in 2026 but still have to through SABS testing, etc. So likely only available to purchase in 2027.

Yep, that works.

Looks different to the ITS and Alliance, wonder who is the OEM for theirs, doubt they manufacture these inhouse.
If my recollection is correct, they have a production facility in Potch. We also have two ITS units at work that were installed roughly the same time. Also no issues with them.

The Alliance Geyser heat Pump in my dad's place gave up and needs to be replaced - the quote for a new 5.5kw alliance heat pump with install for R43K. The installation is in an awkward place on the 1st story roof but this still seems excessive

That seems excessive, the highest I saw was 31k last year for a 5.5

Chatting to one of the plumbers it seems they think heat pumps are no longer cost effective after accounting for their maintenance and reliability

Agree, rather get 3 geysers in series for R15k.

Maybe if we got reliable well known brands sold here it wouldn't be a problem.

That's been my issue in not getting one, I just don't trust any of the brands being sold. I'll pay extra for a reliable well known brand.

Hence I'm waiting on the new Stiebel Eltron units.

Waste of roof space. Connect all panels to mppt controllers.
that’s fine also. Just hook up inverter to geyser. Small element but still have cheap 9 litre flow rate gas as backup. The gas will save you in current JHB weather.

No, the other 2 geysers in series will save you.

You seem to know a bit hence the question. I wonder if gas based water heating solution is available to supplement swim pool heating that works with existing pool heat pump and solar 5kW kit + 4 batteries.

ours was installed around 2021, after our "conventional" tank one burst , once a year service is way cheaper than what it would have cost on power

None that I know of. Only for geyser I’m aware of.
