Heat pump, Good Idea?

New or second hand? I'm expecting if it hasn't already started, a wave of 2022-era panels will be flooding the market as people just gratuitously upgrade for a bit more power/m2 and improved aesthetics or whatever.

That is crazy. Little reason to not do solar these days unless really cash strapped or house has nowhere to put panels.

I would have considered one of these for my charge controller to complete my array but I decided to get the Trina 660W panel. If I can get bigger at a decent price I would since I only need 1 panel.

Yup prices are hecticly low now, I paid R3k a panel in 2022, for bigger panels I paid R1400 this year.
 
Yes, I would only consider it if I am maxed out on power on the roof.

It's more about the time of the day you need hot water.

A heat pump will be able to run in the early morning without depleting my batteries.
 
Your water would still be hot if you had 2 geysers in series (300l). For the price of the heat pump, get 5 geysers.
Even if I had the space that still wouldn't make sense as I would just have double the water to heat, the energy use would just increase.
 
AFAICT you don't need to use the PV inputs, you can just power it from AC which is already solar generation on my side.

It also can be useful having an independent system like this that allows you to directly connect PV panels, for instance in my situation I'm already running close to the maximum PV for my MPPTs and no longer have any space left on the roof close to the inverter. It would actually be quite convenient and cheap for me adding 3 or 4 panels to this unit.

My main goal here is finding a good quality hot water heat pump system that is designed to be outside and that I can control locally through home assistant. I think these Deye units just use Tuya compatible software.
Yea heatpumps tends to be designed to stay outside

And the limit case you mentioned makes perfect sense , i suppose the wider tbe net the more use cases they can cover the better

If you live close to the coast they recommend bluechem treatment
Or should i say they say if no bluechem in coastal conditions no warrantee

Yes newer models come with a wifi module that connects to your wifi
And you can manage via app

Yea if tuya based then HA would help streamline the library of apps

Have not played with HA and heatpump all the knes i have encountered the guys just use the debice app

Pretty much one of the reasons I went with one, cause yeah I had the geyser turned off once it hit temps during the day, but sometimes it would still be colder in the morning then I'd like.

Technically, no, only if you drain them completely. Otherwise, if you use 7kWh a day for the geyser, you will use 7.5 to heat them even if you had 3 geysers (extra .5 is for extra losses). A few of us rarely utilise all the PV from our panels, so most wouldn't notice.

It wont be cheap once you see the price for the Deye if you can get one.
The heatpumps has an encased heat exchanger i side the unit with connections in and out

With flow sensors etc
So once flow stops it auto shuts down the heating (only encountered pool units , no clue on geyser units)

So no split setup

Does make a big difference to jacuzzi bill

Are you off grid? If not, I would say this kind of scenario is what the grid is good for.

There is a diminishing returns thjng at play

You can only use as much electricity as you used hot water

Ie once the five geysers are hot
Amd only kne person showers you only have to heat one showers water

But yea if there will be after jours use of heatjng from battery

A heatpump is awesome
As the same heating effect from a 750w-1kw heatpump as a 4kw element and even more if conditions are perfect

That's terrible if it dropped 20 degrees for the morning, with the heat pump can just run it pretty much whenever. Even with a geyser set to 70 degree one bath can drop it further and you suffer in the morning.
