Helen Suzman
Helen SUZMAN born 7th November 1917 in Germiston and died 01 January 2009 at her home in Johannesburg, Gauteng. She was the daughter of Samuel Gavronsky and Freda David. She married Moses Suzman on 13 August 1937 and was educated at Parktown Convent. She was a Member of Parliament: Progressive Federal Party (re-elected); Dyason Lecturer: Institute of International Affairs, Australia; Gildersleeve Professor: Barnard College, Columbia University; Inaugural.
Helen had two daughters, one of whom is Frances who is married into the well known Jowell family. In Nelson Mandela's biography "The Long Road to Freedom" he said that "she was the first and only woman ever to grace our cells".
