That also happened to me. It would download hellgate_mp_dx10_x64.exe and then throw an error message. I discovered that there where still files being added to the tmp dir even with that error message, so I left it overnight (without clicking ok on error message) and it actually patched up. The game's lag is so bad that I am gonna wait a while before I try to play it again, got The Witcher and TF2 to keep me busy.

I'm experiencing the same crap too. I've tried tons of solutions, you name it , I tried it. I even left it overnight, and in the morning clicking the tick button did not do anything. I only installed this game about 4 days ago, but can only play single player. Im running 64 bit Vista home basic. Please help.
I tried reseting winsock with and without a reboot but it still doesnt help. Mine doesnt mention anything of the 8-2544 error. It just says "Error: Error Connecting To Server". It also takes incredibly long to update. I start downloading the hellgate_mp_dx9_x64.exe file it gets to a maximum of 98%(after about20minutes) then just stops. Some people say it updates in the background, however after the update stops at 98% my router also stops flickering and no data is being transfered. Please help, i really want to play this game online!

GTA5610, I'm not sure what else I migt have done right to get this thing to update. Tried the winsock thing and all that and still got the error messages, so at the end I just left it to do its thing overnight (with error message displaying).
If only you can get that initial patch it should go smoother from there. I did not have trouble patching again after that, guess they fixed something in one of the EXEs you now need :-/

best bet if you are having update issues is to update to stonehedge from the download patch option on the hellgate london site..then run the ingame update to come to the latest.

Is there anyway I can update multiplayer manually? Because the hellgate_mp_dx9_x64.exe file just wont update ingame. Multiplayer never worked, only single player, and it was great fun. But I dont think this game is meant to just be played offline! So if there is anyway I could update multiplayer manually, then I think that would solve this problem. Thanks.
P.S: I dont know if this would make any difference, but I left my PC turned off for the night, and when i tried multiplayer again, it froze at 99% not 98% before displaying the error message. Oh and the tmp file was always empty while downloading "hellgate_mp_dx9_x64.exe."

as i said in the last post...goto www.hellgatelondon.com and click on patches.

Thanks a lot for the help! It got through to character creation! But at first, I waited for a ton of downloads to finish, and then the dreaded "error connecting to server" message appeared. I clicked the tick button, a bit frustrated, but then remembered the solution about alt tabbing to the tmp folder. So then I waited for the ton of downloads to finish and for the error message to appear again, then went to the tmp folder and waddya know! The number of files in it was increasing, over 1000, but after a while it went to about 647 files, and I waited maybe 15 mins but the number didnt change, then I clicked the tick button, re-clicked on multiplayer, and...

i think by the time 1.6 - 2.0 is out the game is going 2be fantastic
its still way more fun for me and my 5 mates that jam than WoW or GW cos its so much faster paced. cant wait to get to stonehenge
and we just got our new 2mb connection with international over fiber isp ..so our pings when we 'lan' 4 people is about 200-250ms
