Help a technophobe!

Here's a thought, i am on pre-paid thus not locked into a contract. Could i go and get an MNT Sim Card and use that in my complex and where ever else MTN has coverage and if i go to an area without coverage i could use my Vodacom Sim. Would this work? There wouldn't be any unlocking issues?

Well yes, that's the genius of the whole prepaid setup currently. If you can get the card without a contract, it's the best option . You can switch between providers at will with very little hassles. You can also add Virgin [yes it's only GPRS, but they are on 50c p/MB out of bundle rate which makes it convenient] to your list.

I think that's partly the hype - go wireless! Get 3G and connect anywhere! - all that sort of thing. Non-tech-savvy people don't stop to think, and the marketing doesn't hint at any issues.
VERY TRUE!...The average user doesn't think about other things that affect wireless connection. They just want it to work.
What do you suggest should be changed to better market a wireless broadband service?

A SIM card that accepts all networks? :p

Yes since I moved to Honeydew in Joey's my Vodacom connection sux :( but it is so frustrating because in the entire house I get close to nill GPRS and Voice and no 3G either. Yet outside the house and around the property I get full Voice and GPRS and sometimes see the 3G icon pop up.

Tested a MTN card and I get full everything including 3G but it was not my SIM card and I never bothered to stop at a MTN shop as yet. I have too many expenses already :/

Hello all,

Thanks again to all for their input. Thanks especially to v3g who put a Vodacom Technician in touch with me. The techie came to my flat and sorted the problem out. IC was correct, my setting needed to be set to 3G only. This allowed the device to pick up the 3G signal in the area, rather than the GPRS. Given i only get 1 or 2 bars but to be honest it's absolutely fine for me!

So glad i was able to get this sorted out. And for those that have experienced problems with Vodacoms customer care i can testify that it is excellent. Between yesterday afternoon and lunchtime today v3g managed to get a techie to me, have the dude fix my issue and then not even require payment! I had my free callout voucher to hand and he just laughed at me! Thanks Vodacom.

LOL, excellent that it's sorted and that the coverage black hole is not entirely a black hole, that 3GOnly setting is very important :).

Recommended homework:
  1. Try to get [post=756106]this application[/post] running with your E220 for an accurate measurement of signal strength; and then
  2. Check your connection's throughput using Vodacom's speed test within the Vodacom network: http://speed.vodacom.co.za/
