Hi guys

I have a motherboard that has only 2 sata ports available.

This is it: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/H61M-P20-G3/Specification

There seems to be 2 solder points for 2 more ports but they were never attached. - see pic

I need to connect 2 HDDs and a DVD writer to the board.

I have seen the PCI-E cards with internal sata ports are quite pricy.

Any ideas for adding the required ports or connecting the required components?

Just because the solder pads are there doesn't mean the supporting logic is.

In the process of soldering extra ports there's the potential to fsck something up.

won't work in this situation

Do you need full SATA performance on the devices you want to plug in ?

You could look at makeshift solution by getting USB3-to-SATA3 converter, you would however be limited to USB3 transfer speed.

Something like this.

technically just needs to run a DVD/CD writer but this would have to plug in externally

@ponder

My mobo only has 3GBps ports.
If I add a SATA expansion card for 6GBps would it support the hard drives on 6GBps?
O/T I know. Just thought of this when reading the thread.
