Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate section for this but I didn't really know where else to ask...
I want to buy a GPS around the R2000 mark... I'm not expecting too much here because I know my price isn't very high, but if possible, I'd like something with voice prompts ("Turn left in 100m" kinda thing) and speed trap warnings.

What would you guys recommend?

I'm also not sure about how easy some of these things are to update or what the costs involved are.

I saw these but a haven't a clue if they're any good. Most people seem to prefer Garmin but they're quite pricey.

Particularly liked this one even though it's above my price range: http://www.techshop.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?ItemId=1022

Thanks :)

The 360 is about double my budget so I don't think that's the one for me.
The 205 seems pretty decent in terms of features.

How do you handle updates? Do you have to purchase them? Are they downloadable?

Mind the n00b questions, it's my first time buying a GPS

At the moment the 200 range represent the best value imo. Game/ Makro frequently have specials for the standard 200 at about R1600-1700. Make sure you get the one that takes the micro sd card as that is the latest version with more features. You normally get 1 free upgrade of the maps after your purchase and then upgrades cost at current levels about R350 per version (i.e if you don't buy an upgrade the cost would be double to upgrade to the next level). Speedtrap locations are updated weekly on the Garmap site and can be downloaded and installed for free once you are registered.

BTW if you prepared to buy secondhand on bidorbuy expect to pay just over R1000 for one with the latest maps included. (You would possibly not qualify for a free upgrade in that case)

Get garmin man, rather a bit extra for quality. Speed traps are very accurate which will more than make up the extra cost involved.

I have the nuvi 200 and it is sweet hey, was 400 bucks more than tomtom but i would rather 400 rand knowing i am getting a solid product with speed trap warning than try and save 400 bucks and get a fine for 400 bucks the next day :p

Thanks mikef. It's a gift so don't really wanna buy a second-hand one.
That 310 looks awfully tempting but I'm wondering how it compares to the Tom Tom One?

Haha good point that

What features do the more expensive ones have that the small don't ... ?

Who is this gift for? A love interest? you will look like a cheap bastid skimping on the one you desire :p, charlie that is silly if you ask me, turn left here is good enough and not worth the extra cash.

LOL if you MUST know, it's for my mama.
She's the type to get lost in her back yard (and she'll admit to that) and loves speeding about in her beemer :o

since i had mine i NEVER got lost so it definitely will help your mom

the price of the updates depends on the version that comes with the unit, i have the latest 2009 version maps and it cost me around R300, all the update prices were very reasonable. also the speed trap feature is awsome. i update the speed traps every week and it helps me a lot cos at a times i fly :D
hope that helps

You have been most helpful, thank you :)

How are the Garmins in terms of speed & calculating routes?

Nuvi 200 man, remember who brought you into the world and made sure your little snot face was wiped and gave a the life you have now :)

You don't skimp when it comes to women and your mother/father. Without your parents you would not get laid because you would not exist and without women you would not get laid unless you like the sausage or consider your hand a form of getting laid :p
