Help buying a used car

+1, my i30 just ticked over to 230'000km and so far all that has been done to it mechanically were the drop links and the water pump.

That said, it is hard to recommend it in the presence of the almighty Jazz :)
 
Look at a Volkswagen jetta V or VI. The boot on that car can fit an elephant. Lots of different engine options thus you can choose for a more economical diesel or a sportier turbo petrol. With vw you know there are a lot of spare parts available. Seriously just test drive one and you'll see that it is a quality vehicle. Just remember with a diesel you are looking at possible replacement of the turbo and injectors if the vehicle is high mileage. Not always a problem petrol. I'd personally go for a 2.0 turbo. Same engine as in the mkv Gti.
 
Honda Jazz get my vote as well.

Don't disregard it thinking it's small. Go actually try one.

Ask them to show you how the seats work and you'll understand.
 
Gonna say Honda Jazz as well, though there might be a lot of spares for the likes of the VW Jetta, VW spares aren't cheap.

A german turbo performance car and a baby in the back seat does not make for happy thoughts.

A VW is not necessarily a bad car, if you really like it make sure you stay away from the performance models, rather go for one of those dull models.

This. You have to consider the type of person who buys a performance model. Not the type of person who would drive the thing carefully.

Okay so will be looking at Jazz, Rio and Mazda 3 in that order, thanks for the help so far, any more ideas are very welcome.
 
my boet is also looking for a small hatchback, he currently drives a 2009 Polo 1.6, which is busy falling apart.

He was always going on about the crappy Korean cars and not wanting anything but a Polo, but I finally convinced him to test drive a Rio this morning.

He was totally blown away by the Rio's performance and comfort, not to mention the spec levels. And that was a 2012 1.4 compared to his 1.6.

Kia Rio is a excellent recommendation too if boot space isn't a top priority. The Rio boot is no bigger than average. The Ford Fiesta’s is far more spacious, with a seats-down capacity compared to the Rio’s. Seats up, the Rio’s boot space seriously lags behind the Honda Jazz’s. The Mazda3 doesn’t rise above the pack in terms of practicality but it's still a good choice too. So it’s spacious, but perhaps not quite as spacious as you’d like it to be.
 
Any thoughts on volvo? There are never many 2nd hand for sale.

where have you been looking/ there are many second hand Volvos around at good prices too, but Volvo is an unknown regarding it's associated problems and reliability, everything you hear is always hearsay.

They are good solid cars with a good history behind them and they the pace setters on safety but apparently will cost you an arm and leg if something were to break(hearsay). I would buy a Volvo but not as my primary mode of transport.

you will find a honda ballade with 20000km, year old balance of warranty etc around R165k - there are also KIA and HYUNDAI
I know that many will say do not buy a rental car - but I have never had issues (a lot better than buying a user car from some dealerships - there are also some dodgy people gumtree and olx, but there are some honest ones as well)
