My mom has been trying to cancel her deceased husband's MTN SIM contract since the 2nd of January. She wants to retain the cell number, but cancel the contract. She went into MTN and completed all the documentation in January.

28th Feb her account was debited with the contract amount. She phoned MTN, they hadn't received the cancellation documentation. And in order to retain the cell phone number and to change it into a prepaid SIM she would have to pay a termination fee and would lose all minutes previously paid for.

Can someone please offer some help on how to do this without being taken advantage of by MTN?

If my mom does a SIM transfer will that be better? Losing the minutes that have already been paid for is a problem. There are about 200 minutes on the phone so using them up before cancelling is a bit difficult. My mom thinks they should transfer the minutes - these are paid for minutes not free bonus minutes.

Ask to speak to the supervisor, then when he answer, talk to his supervisor. Follow up is the new password, daily, till you are fix up.

Years ago I canceled a contract {30days notice} that same evening I lost all my free minutes.

My 73 yr old mother was swearing last night - a sure sign she is VERY stressed about this. Losing something you paid for is not OK.

Can no-one offer any help on this? She needs to cancel the contract as she can't afford to keep paying it. She needs to keep the number at least until the estate is wound up as various notifications etc come through on the number. She doesn't want to lose the minutes she has already paid for. Is there a way to do this without losing one's mind in frustration?

Convert to prepaid and buy her minutes.
