I wonder if anyone can help. A friend of mine has a Compaq Evo N800v laptop that has Windoze XP Pro installed with SP2.He was in a rush to leave yesterday so he just closed the screen and unplugged the laptop. When he returned he attempted to start the machine but it only gets as far as the XP logo and then goes directly to the screen that allows you to boot in safe mode, safe mode with cmd prompt etc.

We can get no further than this-not even into xp in safe mode.He also can't enter the bios settings to change boot order or anything.

We are both sitting in London at the moment so no access to recovery discs etc.

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.:o

If you have the XP install cd, you can run the repair option, no data or apps will be lost, it just fixes xp files.

Have you tried the last-known good option (press F8 as XP starts to boot)?

Yep I've tried that:o As stated the laptop starts the boot sequence and as the XP logo disappears from the screen it goes straight to the page that provides the option to boot in safe mode-safe mode with cmd prompt etc.

Can't get past that screen no matter what we try:confused::mad:

Try unplug the power cable, remove the battery, then press and hold the power-on button for approx 30 seconds - replace the battery and power cable, then try and power-on... not sure what it does, but worked for me on my HP and Dell when this happened.

I'm sitting with a HP Compaq 7010nx with the same prob. This one has bad sectors on the drive though. I repaired Windows about 3 times to no avail. Eventually whacked in a new drive. Still struggling to recover off the old one :|

Did you ever get this sorted?
I have exactly the same problem. It gets worse.
I do have the recovery disks. Basically you get three options:
1. Reformat and restore to factory settings. All data gone
2. Restore software to factory settings and keep data. Lose all own installed software.
3. Use windows restore to restore to an earlier restore-point.

Great!! Option 3 is just what I'm looking for so I choose that and the CD is rejected, the laptop reboots and I'm back where I started from.
I can't even start windows from the cd and use Windows system restore.

I've just finished running option 2
After telling me it has successfully restored windows I can restart the system
Now I get the message "Windows could not start vbecause the following file is missing or corrupt"...
Why does Microsoft let these idiots loose on Windows??
