Would there be a substantial differance in performace between the above 2 boards and something like a Gigabyte G31? No overclocking planned

This is the proposed rig:

Intel E5200 2.5Ghz
Gigabyte G31
2x 2gb DDR2 800
ATI HD4850 512mb
2x 320gb Sata2
DVD-RW Sata 2
Gigabyte Superb power 550W

The G31 will be perfect for you if you don't intend on overclocking etc. There will be no performance difference AFAIK. Only drawback is limited expansion.

Is there nothing slightly better than the G31? maybe something similar but with RAID

Cheapest next one up with RAID would be this:

±R750 Asus P5N73-AM ; all-in-one , support intel Core2 / Core2-Extreme / P4 / Penitum-D , nVidia nForce 7050 / 610i chipset , 1333/1066/800/533 fsb , 2x DDR2 800(oc)/667 , 4 x s-ata2 with raid 0,1 ; 1 x parallel ata , on-board VGA + VT1708B 7.1 audio + 10/100 lan ; 2x pci , 1 x pci-e(1x) , 1 x pci-e(16x) , with com/serial + parallel port - micro atx - RAID 0/1

Everything else - G35, G45, Q45, P35, P43, P45 is over R1k.

Thanks. That board does look better. I can spend over a grand if needed but would prefer not to. Maybe I'l look at the one in the OP. Are there any others? Also, are there no boards that dont have ide, fdd, serial, parallel etc as it is completely useless

Probably just going with the Gigabyte G31.

Now I can get the E5200 for R999 or the E7200 for R1499, Both 2.5Ghz just the E7200 has higher fsb and cache.

which one should I choose?

The G31 will be fine ye!

The e5200 has a freakin 12.5x multi, and a 800 FSB, check out the reviews, it's the new budget OC'ing champ!!

Bump the FSB from 200 to 300, and you a have a 3.75GHz chip with minimal voltage increase.
Closer to 4 (and if you're lucky over) requires too much voltage and results in increased heat, disproportionate to performance gains..

But 3.75 would be a nice 24/7 setting!

I would drop the max multiplier to 10.5 or 11 and run the FSB at 333 and the RAM at DDR667
that way you get a 1:1 sync providing better stability and more consistante performance.

Also, DDR2-667 ram is much cheaper right now (about R100 per chip)
