Help choosing a disposable car??

Hi,

Long story short: I need a car for 5 month. Something for R50k or less that I can then sell quick without any hassles. Hopefully for around the same price I bought it for...

Reason being is I've just sold my car as I was due to relocate end of the month for work but the contract has now been delayed until Jan...

So

1. What car do I look at?

2. Is there another option vs buying I'm not aware of that wont cost a bomb?

Old Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic.

Otherwise depending on how often you commute, look at using UBER instead of buying a car.

Compare what it would cost you to buy a car, insure it, petrol etc. and factor in a loss on resale (you might get lucky, or you might sit with the car for a while) vs. just using an UBER to get around.

Nine to five every.single.day so uber might be bust...

I've been eyeing a few hondas...

Last model was manufactured 2008

They still sell second hand 2008 models for the same price they sold for NEW in 2008.
For some reason South African's love those bakkies. Well, any 1/2 ton bakkie tbh.

honda, cant go wrong.
bought a ballade vtec 98 model for 50k , sold it for 70k. wasnt even looking to sell lol:D

Definitely look at Toyota Corollas if you shopping in that age bracket. Back then Toyota Corollas were still rock solid.

Atos not bad.
We get around 450km's per tank refill (around 3l at a time).
Comfortable enough, zippy enough and if you can find one in good condition under R50K go for it.

I'd be interested to compare:

For Uber working on a R5 base fare plus R7.50 per KM, with 21.6 working days a month and 7km to work, that's:

21.6 x 2 x (5 + (7.5 x 7)) = ~R2,484 per month

For buying R50,000 Civic/Corolla with the same days and distance above:

Change of ownership + roadworthy: ~R66 (R400 once off divided over 6 months - I don't know what it costs now)
Insurance: ~R500 (depending on your profile)
Fuel: ~R388 (R12.83 x (302.4km / 10 kilometres per litre)) Based on (7km x 2 times a day x 21.6 days))
Depreciation: R833 per month (assuming you buy for R50,000 and sell for R45,000 in December)

= ~R1,787 per month

So definitely cheaper to buy instead of Uber, but the gap was closer than I thought. Sure you can skimp on insurance, and depreciation might not hit so dramatically, but still interesting nonetheless.

Uber Pros: Much less stress from traffic, no stress of selling a car when you leave in December
Uber Cons: Needing Uber on weekends makes this option much more expensive

Buying Pros: You have the convenience of your own car 24/7, you could potentially make some money if you buy smart
Buying Cons: Risking an accident every time you take her our, can lose money if the market doesn't bite in December and you need to sell quick
