So I was about to dash off.
Start the car, apply brake to shift gear into reverse.
Gear selector refuses to budge from park.

Called roadside assist, they are busy, can get to me for about 2 hrs ( have 2 priority calls on freeway).
They asked me to check that the brake light come on when brake is applied - brake lights do indeed come on.
Told me to "wiggle" the brake pedal & try shift gear - wiggled like crazy - no go !

What is even worse, is that this car has parked the other in !!

anyone have any further ideas, prior to me setting the thing on fire !

And you are pressing the button on the side in? (I don't know much about auto's, but know my mothers VW auto has a button on the side of the gear selector)

Last time I had an automatic with a gear lever stuck it was a gearbox issue and an expensive repair. Needless to say I sold the car "As is" that day.

You can try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, making sure that the car loses charge, then reconnect - sometimes it will reset the system. Obviously if it's just physically jammed, that's a whole other problem.

What...

How will "Resetting" the system move the gear lever?

The problem is the solenoid which is connected to the brake pedal, thats most likely the issue.

But most auto boxes have a fail safe button incase this happens, they are sometimes hidden (looks like a hole for a pencil to fit in, ill post a pic when i find one.

The gear lever would be locked in park by an actuator solenoid, which is triggered for release when you put your foot on the brake. It may be stuck or out of sync and just needs to be reset by cycling the power.

Edit: Could even be a blown fuse.

Make and model would help.

Could be a fuse thing, the "brake by wire" cars had some teething problems with the mid 2000's introduction of this technology.
Had something similar with my E320.
The roadside assist people probably asked if the lights came on to see if it was a simple fuse... I'm not sure if the lights work off the same circuit... so it still could just be a fuse.

I assume since the lights come on that the IGNITION selector turns??? Had an issue with a worn out key barrel once. key turning would "feel" normal but nothing was happening.

Gear selector linkage?

make and model would really help...

Ok
sorry folks
I had to commandeer someone to take me out, just got back.
It's a 2011 range rover sport sc.
People at roadside assist mentioned solenoid & also access to a cable which they say is not easy to get to.
They also said not to disconnect the battery.

They will be here in about 20mins (although i do not believe they operate in the same time zone as us).

Oh, yea, all the normal lights come on when the key is turned - there is no indication of any fault, the car starts, but remains locked in park.

Wonder if you have corroded joints in the wiring loom running by the bottom door sills, recall this being one of the related issues if I'm not mistaken.

They came and conquered.
Connected a laptop to the car - everything appeared ok.
They then rocked mine gently back and forth a couple of times - suddenly a "beep" came out of mine - guy jumped into mine started it & got it into neutral.
Took it for a spin around the area manually shifting thru gears.
Was told it should be good, but to bring it in for a new relay and some connecter on monday.
