Hi Guys.

For some reason my moms PC just got an admin password for absolutely no reason. And none of us no what it is.
I would appreciate if someone could PM me instructions on how to remove a password ... the only way I know how is log into safe mode administrator account ... but its the administrator account with the password. The computer has never had a password before.

Regards

Itai

What OS?

If it's XP home you can boot in safe mode and bypass the login then change the password. If Win 2000 or XP Pro you'll need to use Ultimate Boot CD or WinInternals to boot from and open the SAM database to change the password.

I think you can also do a repair install of windows which might reset it as well.

Would be cool if the solution is posted ;) I might come across this sometime and the info would help.

I'm using SP2 ... but I wonder what it is ... all my mom uses on it is basically skype and MSN Live.

Have seen 1 instance of SP3 changing the admin password.
Possibly an automatic update to sp3 from Windows update?

Here's a link to one password recovery tool - seems to have a few good comments around the net.

Do any of the the other accounts have admin rights? Like the first account created on the PC?

If so, logon with that account, and reset the admin password.

Admin is the only account on the PC. And no ... its not legit ... I'm not paying 1k so that she can do skype and MSN.

Hmm...put the drive in another pc...copy the documents off... reinstall... xp likes that anyways :p

Personally - tot something I think a dealer should boast about.

Why not just install Ubuntu - iirc there is a Skype client as well as MSN support.

Yup, that's a tool that I have used many times. Just make sure you blank the password instead of putting in another password. Then you can change it again once you're in Windows.

Cos Ubuntu is and will always be a beta product and it failed twice within the first 10mins of using it.
