Hilda Fourie, Beeld

Pretoria - From underneath his broken-down car on the N14 highway, Wolfram Ebel heard his friend, who had come to help him, shout: "Leave me alone, leave me alone!"

Then Ebel heard a shot and Dieter Furrutter shouted: "Help, help, I've been shot!"

Furrutter, owner of Dieter Car Sales in Randburg, died on the scene. He was in his 60s.

According to Ebel, also in his 60s, his Jeep started giving trouble on the N14 highway at about 12:00 as he was travelling in the direction of Pretoria, said police spokesperson Constable Patricia Simelane.

Leaking oil and water

He was on his way to Swaziland when the vehicle gave out about a kilometre from the R511 offramp at the Diepsloot squatter camp. The Jeep was leaking oil and water.

Ebel called Furrutter, from whom he had bought the vehicle a while ago, and asked him for assistance.

"While he was waiting, Ebel crawled under his vehicle to try and find out what was wrong," Simelane said.

"While he was underneath the vehicle, he heard the deceased park his car near his. A few seconds later he heard Furrutter arguing with people.

"Furrutter shouted: 'Leave me alone, leave me alone!'

"Then Ebel heard a shot and Furrutter shouting: 'Help, help, I've been shot!' "

Furrutter was shot in the neck. He died next to his Mercedes-Benz.

Massive search for men

When Ebel got out from underneath the Jeep, one of the attackers grabbed and searched him.

Without assaulting him, they took his cellphone and R3  000 and fled over the highway into Diepsloot.

Simelane said Ebel wasn't sure whether there were three or four men, but one was wearing a blue T-shirt and another a black T-shirt.

One was carrying a handgun.

A passer-by called the police after the incident.

Scores of policemen and reservists were sent into Diepsloot shortly afterwards to try and find the gang.

A police helicopter was also used in the search, but at the time of going to press the search was still on.

Ebel made a statement at the scene.

He had to watch his friend's body being loaded into the hearse. Then he had to get back under his Jeep to try and repair it.

I find this a very sad story indeed :(

This is really sad, but I just wonder if the 'friend' with the car troubles didn't have anything to do with this? Why would you carry on working underneath you car if you friend or helping hand arrive? Won't you get out of the car and to great? If this guy got out underneath his car, he would've seen the guys coming and would've got a better view of what's going on. He got out from under the car only after his friend was shot.

Hmmm well I guess it might of happened quickly? I mean also he was in his 60's so he might of been a little slow?

I also wondered about that....

This is very sad.

But lets look at the facts shall we ?

1. His friend owned a garrage in Randburg, to travel from Randburg to the R 511 turn off would have taken the friend nothing less than 30 minutes quickest.
2. The Person who's car broke down was under the car for that full duration ? (I can understand having a look at it, but to be laying under the car for close to an hour )
3. They shot the friend right as he stopped instead of shooting both, the other friend wasn't armed so why would they shoot one and leave the other ?
4. They never took the car/cars. They shoot and leave the cars... why shoot him to begin with ?

There is to many questions in this little event. I'm not saying the other friend is indeed responsible for this, I do however think there is more to this than meets the eye.

1. 30 min ? you must be joking, but anyway....
2. An hour ? Taking your 30 min travel time, he could've waited for 20 and then got underneath his car.
3. and this is his fault how ? How many couples have been robbed, one killed, one not ? So the one living is in cahoots with the killers ?
4. See 3 above. People have been killed before without loss of property

C'mon Pitbull, you can't be serious. Not one fact in your statement...

C'mon Pitbull, you can't be serious

1. you have clearly never traveled that road.
2. yes, I would say that it took him an hour at least to get there. Sure he could have waited 20 minutes, but why phone the friend then if you didn;t check underneath already to see what the problem is ?
3. I still believe people are only shot if they try anything funny. No human being will shoot another just because they can. Unless he (a 60yo man) posed a threat to them I don;t think they would have shot him. They already shot and killed one guy why leave the other to identify you
4. Not unless provoked or they posed a threat to the attackers.

Yes I am serious. There is to many questions here. If he can answer all of it then sure I'm all for it.

ps. Note that the Merc's boot was open ? Did you actually look at the pictures ?
Now if the boot was open it means these 2 guys talked before all this happened. How come the boot is open ? The dead guy prob spoke to the guy under the car, if that is where he was and then went back to get something out of the boot.

That was not mentioned in the article.

1. Many, many, many times...at all hours of the day and night, sober and not..:) I wouldn't have commented if I hadn't.
2. Who knows ?
3. "No human being will shoot another just because they can." Not even going to comment on this one
4. No comment either

So it's been stated as fact that the boot was open before the killers arrived ? Missed that. Yip, guilty as charged....

Anyway, that's me out of this thread....

Mis-informed!

I think all of you who say there is foul play here have clearly not read all the facts!!

Unbeknown to Ebel was that as he lay under his Jeep Cherokee looking for an oil leak, Furrutter's killers were about to attack him.

The impending attack on him was halted as Furrutter, who lived in South Africa for 45 years, arrived.

Changing tactics the men charged Furrutter, apparently pulling him from his car and shooting him in the neck as he pleaded for his life and urged his killers to take his wallet and cellphone.

Leaving him to roll on the edge of the highway while frantically trying to stop the bleeding with his bare hands, the gunmen turned their attention to Ebel, who fought frantically to stop being dragged from underneath his car as Furrutter screamed for help.

After pulling him from underneath the car the men repeatedly punched and kicked him before they grabbed his cellphone and R5 000 in cash.

With their loot in hand the men ran across the busy highway into the township where they disappeared, leaving Furrutter to bleed to death in the road.

Shaking his head as he wiped his face with his blood-stained hands, Ebel, supported by a friend, watched as police cordoned off the scene looking for clues to the identity of Furrutter's killers.

You have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT
You want to explain that to my 70 year old father who was held up at his business, and then shot in the back for no reason? He wasn't resisting, and had his back turned to the guy. He is extremely lucky he survived thanks to a decent hospital.
They then ran out, leaving my mother and 2 other customers standing there in shock.

G26

PS - I have 3 other personal stories of friends who were either shot, or shot at while not resisting. One guy..they took his car, started driving away, stopped....put the gun out the window and started shooting. At that point, he decided F'EM! and pulled out his gun that they had not seen or found, and ventilated the car. Up to that point, he was willing to let them take the car, but when they decided to shoot him, he changed his mind fast. They found one dead in the car in Randfontein, and the other later after following a blood trail.

Your comment is too laughable to even consider really.

Btw..another friend was robbed at gunpoint in a similar fashion to this guy in the story. They came out of no-where from the grass on the side of the road, and were on him before he knew it. Robbed him and his family, beat them up, and left the car.

You guys seeing conspiracies here have no idea at all about anything.

Perhaps it was the reporting on the incident but on first hearing the report on 702, my gut feel was, "something is not right here". Maybe it was the mention of R5000.

Go cry us a river will you.

My family had a few close calls and all ended well. Sure, you must be one of the unlucky people I guess. OFC I know what I'm talking about, stop reading what you want to read and start realizing there is more to life than just bang bang. Your name says it all.

Don't be a dumbass, people have been stabbed for R2. Shot for R10 or some crappy cheap ass cellphone. F that, people have been shot or stabbed for road rage. People kill other people for insurance money or just even jealousy.
