Hi guys

I'm new here but have been lurking reading up some of the threads here.
My PC was damaged by a lightning strike via the telephone lines through the ADSL modem and through the LAN cable to my PC. I'm trying now to claim from insurance and was asked to get a damage report and quote for repair/replacement.

Live in Edenvale so just came back from Incredible Connection in Greenstone Mall. They've tested all the components to be fine but my MB to be fried. So they've given me a quote on new MB and CPU, RAM and PSU to go with it.

Quote is:
Gigabyte EP43-DS3L MB - R1,460
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 - R1,696
Gigabyte 350W PSU - R400
Transcend 3Gb RAM - R810
Total = R4,716 (incl labour)

My damaged PC is an old one. P4 2.4Ghz on Intel D865GBF MB

Was actually hoping the whole thing was dead so I can claim for a complete new PC but no luck. If the claim is successful, I'm hoping they would pay it to me and I can just add in my own cash to build a new system
Also I'd like to get a second check and quote but dont know where to take it

Firstly do any of you guys have a suggestion where I could take the PC for a second damage report and quote? I live in Edenvale and work in Sandton

Secondly, any of you have some advice on components to get and prices? Would also like to get a new HDD - preferably 500Gb - and a 22" LCD monitor.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah thats the idea. Payout will be better on Incredible Corruption quotes. I'd have to be stupid or just plain ignorant to buy components at those prices.

Thanks for the links SlyFly

Seems like basically a whole new rig anyway ;)
Slightly on topic note, same happened to me,twice. Go wireless :)

If you have a gfx card that psu will be cutting it close.

If I may ask, with who are you? The insurance?

Send in those quotes, think they will pay you out in cash! :)

Its done via a broker but its a Mutual & Federal policy. Its actually my vehicle insurance policy with household contents (including PC) thrown in

Got a Winfast Leadtek A280 which is a GeForce 4 but if I get the cash as I hope to get then I'd obviously get a newer GFX card and bigger PSU to suit

Lightning damage

Same happened to me and I’m also looking for quotes. Thanks for the links, really helped to send some more emails for quotes.

We do fault reports and quotations for insurance. For the last 12 years we have had no fault report rejected by any insurer

You are required to be registered as a dealer here, before you go punting your wares.

And I missed the necro already... so it surely deserved a RAS :p
