In 2006 this forum helped me build a pc , which is still going strong, http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/50302-Good-desktop-PC-deals?highlight=
You also helped me with minor upgrades in 2009 http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/198350-Help-me-upgrade?highlight=

At this point my pc specs are:
INTEL_ Motherboard: DP965LT; ntel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz ; 3 GB RAM; Disk size: 232 GB; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260; Creative SB X-Fi Audio; D-Link DGE-528T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter; CD rom: CD/DVDW SH-W162Z; 20" Samsung LED; G9 laser mouse (Logitech); G15 gaming keyboard (Logitech); OS: Windows XP Home Edition; Service Pack: 3.0

What I need is something that can play BF3 in all it glory - Recommended System Requirements for BF3:
OS: WINDOWS 7 64-BIT; PROCESSOR: QUAD-CORE CPU; MEMORY: 4 GB; HARD DRIVE: 20 GB; GRAPHICS CARD: DIRECTX 11 COMPATIBLE WITH 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 OR ATI RADEON 6950); SOUND CARD: DIRECTX COMPATIBLE

My budget is around R12k - hopefully I can re-use some of my existing components (mouse, keyboard)

PC International has a pc at around R13k, which I am considering.
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4Ghz CPU; Asus P8P67 Pro Mainboard; 8GB DDR3-1600 (Kingston-Hyper X); 2 TB SATA3- 7200RPM HDD ( 64MB Cache); Coolermaster RCP 100 Case; 10x Blu-Ray Writer LS; 600W Huntkey PSU; Nvidia GTX 570 1GB DDR5 Asus; 24" Acer LED Monitor -2msec ; MS wireless desktop 3000; Logitech 5.1 Speakers (5 Satellites + Sub ) X-530;
No OS Included

Is this a reasonable deal? Or can someone give me some better advice ito core components I should consider? Thanks

P67BG Intel Burrage Flat P67 (Extreme Series) R 1,583 incl. [Better board]
Intel Core i5 2500K Processor - 3.30GHz, Socket 1155, 6MB L3, 2.0Gb/s DMI Interface R 1,878 incl. [speed difference between this and 2600k is little. check tomshardware.]
4x4Gb DDR3 (probably a overkill for windows :D )
2x 1Tb Samsung (or even better Hitachi) Raid-0 OS + apps only
Get several 2Tb's for storage.
Keep the current Graphics card. should still work fine.

Drop the blu ray writer and get an SSd instead. You dont need a blu ray writer. Just a get a standard dvd writer.

Also I dont like the PSU, get a Corsair.

Rather just buy the components and build it yourself, its cheaper.

Build the machine yourself, mostly because that PSU is an unknown to me. Will check later in the day if its decent

i5 2500k - R2150
Decent P67 mobo - R2000, can get it cheaper
RAM - 8GB DDR3 1600mhz - R1000
HDD your choice - R500
GPU - GTX570 or HD6970 - R3600
Case - CM690ii - R1000 max, but feel free to choose one that looks good to you
PSU - Corsair 650W is great - R900 I think
That leaves ±R2700 for a screen

What did I miss?

Thanks

I'm not gonna have time/patience/know-how to build my own - will rather just ask them to quote and put one together, based on the advice here.

Stick with the asus p67, intel boards is horrible :(
So is your grammar :p

Rather go for the MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard if you're willing to fork out that much on a motherboard for a single GPU setup.
Otherwise look at the MSI P67A-C43 motherboard if you know that you'll never run a SLI/CrossFire setup.

If you're going for a Huntkey PSU, make sure that it is the X7 series! The other series PSU's from Huntkey are terrible to say the least.

So is your grammar :p

Intel boards make me do that :(

anyway i killed 2 intel 775 board by changing the memory settings, they never booted after it, i removed the battery, switched pins to reset the bios, nothing board does not work lol

What about my current graphics card- throw away? Or can I somehow combine it with the new graphics card?

You could set it as a physx card if you wanted. Or you could sell it. Or you could give it to me. If all those options have been exhausted, then you may throw it away :p

Another -1 for Huntkey from me.

I like Archers recommendation.

Wait for amd if you can :D. Not long to go now and they may surprise you. It would be a sin to buy a nice new pc and then find out amd is better and cheaper. Your pc is more than capable of making it :D unless you only want intel.

Also amd's new gpu's will be out in December before xmas they reckon. I know you should not wait for computer bits but dec is not far away and you could pick up a really good card for the same money in 2 and half months.

So the reasons you should wait

AMD's new line of cpu's
Amd's new line of gpu's
Intel new cpu's end of the year

Anyways if you are hell bent on a system and not prepared to wait two months then archers stuff looks awesome.

PC looks good. Just huntkey is crap. Ask for corsair or Antec or Seasonic.

Your GTX260 doesn't do DX11 so won't be able to run BF3 in it's glory. Get that 570 or 6970.

To play devils advocate
Reasons not to wait
Rand/dollar exchange rate is expected to weaken, making PC components more expensive
AMD GPUs will launch next year only afaik
AMD CPUs make only be available for purchase November (even though launch is in October)

I'm struggling with exactly the same questions, need to get some new hardware for my rig. When is the BF3 launch date? Maybe wait until then to make a decision. The exchange rate may still screw you around however :/

Look it depends whether or not a person can cope. His system for now could have bf 3 running decent for now. q6600 and 260 will play it fine, there is no ways i am upgrading my cpu not with intel's new 3d chips coming end of the year or early next year. The vga card ya go for it but cpu i dunno hey big things coming by the end of the year :D.

It would just suck buying now and you wake up in decemeber and intel's new cpu's are mind blowing and ati's new cards are insane and you sit thinking why didn't i just wait :D. ATI are pushing to make a Christmas release.

As you say it may not be worth waiting but with that hardware and only a few months hmmmm i wold certainly ponder it for a minute :p

Thanks all. Greatly appreciate the advice.

Largely settled on the core components:
Intel i7-2600K 3.4Ghz CPU; Asus P8P67 Pro Mainboard; 8GB DDR3-1600, 2 TB SATA3, Nvidia GTX 570, Coolermaster ATX, 10x Blu-Ray Writer LS +1.2kVa UPS

I'll be testing this baby with the release of BF3 beta on 27th Sept, open Beta on 29th!! see you all on the battlefield.
