Help me if you can... Really confused

Ok so I have 1x laptop (XP), 1x desktop (Vista), 1x Crappy Telkom Wireless ADSL router.

The problem, installed SP3 on XP machine now has no internet access through wired or wireless When at home, but works perfectly in other places (wireless at least havent tried wired..)

More interestingly, i can fix the problem if instead of auto assigning the DNS servers i set them to the router i.e. 10.0.0.2. This isnt a good solution as it obviously wont work anywhere where the router isnt 10.0.0.2.

Basically the Telkom router wont dish out (assign?) DNS to the laptop, but works flawlessly with the desktop. Also it used to work perfectly with the laptop before SP3 but now doesn't even though the laptop still works in other places.

If you're confused so am I. Looking for a miracle and any advice that isn't "format"

It's a problem encountered when using SP3 and a Telkom router. The solution is (if you are always using the same ISP) to manually put in your DNS servers provided by your service provider (as per the abovementioned thread).

There was a problem with XP SP3 that caused this... I am sure you can Google it.

IIRC the solution had to do with uninstalling SP3... then install Internet Explorer 7 BEFORE SP3... and then do the SP3 update. That method has caused no problems for me...

My usual solution is simpler: Move to a different operating system

Actually I am dual booting (Hardy), but my parents are on the windows partition, all this is for them.

Rolling back SP3 or setting the DNS server is not what im looking for. Surely there is a solution to this come on

If you:
- disable the windoze firewall
- re-enable automatic ip address assigning
- goto a cmd prompt and type ipconfig /renew
- use ipconfig to view if you got an ip address

... does it work with the firewall off?

In LAN Properties, make you set to DHCP Ip

In cmd prompt...

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /renew

Let me know if it worked

Post #2 is the solution to the problem. Just enter the DNS addresses assigned to your router in XP's IP configuration. Vista doesn't have this problem.

Nope not a firewall issue

Try this....

But the laptop has to work everywhere not just at home, if I manually enter these surely there'll be conflicts in other locations?
