Help me pick a GPU for under 3k (ebucks friendly stores only)

Lol the very first reply to your thread suggested almost the same card, the powercolor range from what I've seen the past couple of months are great value for money compared to other cards in the same price ranges

Considering they both seem to rank the same is there anything that would push the HD 7950 ahead?

I'm leaning towards the HD 7950 as it has mini dp x2 and my one Apple display is mini dp.

More memory, bigger bus size, more shaders, more everything. HD7950 is the better card in all aspects. And with the more recent versions of OS X you won't need hacked drivers to run it properly either (or at least this should be the case).

You would have considerably less driver issues with Nvidia, though.

Even with overclocking, the GTX750 won't match a GTX750 Ti. It'll come close, but there's still considerable headroom on the Ti even without the power connector.

My 2 cents.

Spend the money to get a 4k compatible card, so that you can try the 4k display we have lying about in the house.

Driver wise - any 6x or 7x radeon is fine, as is any Nvidia from the GT610 and up.
Nvidia's have slightly more stable drivers, but AMD has faster GPU's.

Mac Pro PSU can drive a 400W card without issue, but you'll need external power if you want to get sexy and run SLI on a second card.
I'd probably suggest getting a better cpu first though, and more ram before you go that route, $$$ bills yo, but you'd have a pimped out Mac..

Ram - 3 x 16 + 1 x 8 for 56G to max it out.
CPU's - Takes LGA1366 CPU's - the X5687 is the best bang for buck at the moment in the quad cores, X5675 in the hex cores price wise.

Most cards with Displayport 1.2 connectors are suited for 4K, but you need a Displayport SST-compatible monitor for 4K at 60Hz without much issues.
 
Its a HDMI1.4 display 4k Display, so only 30hz. No DP sadly.
I still haven't tried it on a computer, as I don't have a 4k compatible display card, it mostly works as a tv running Plex.

Wasn't expensive though, I paid 2999RMB for it (its a 39" panel with Android / 8G ram / 32G Flash / Quad Core cpu (some sort of Mediatek Arm, haven't really checked... )

I'll probably bring a 29" 4k DP model back next time I'm in China. The Samsungs are reasonable, as are the Philips @ 2500-3000RMB in that size. Last year they were 5k rmb+, so I didn't bother.

That is the Ti version, its just not in the title, from the description further down on that page "Gigabyte Nvidia GT 750 Ti 2 GB Graphics Card" I was also deceived at first haha... Come now, you okes from NAG should know that by just looking at the picture:p

Which is completely bogus, I never wrote any such thing.


AMD has crap drivers, NVIDIA's are better (although still pretty ***).
AMD does have faster cards though.

At least you won't have dodgy driver issues on Apple, as they release the drivers with the OS updates, and they just work. You only need to install NVIDIA drivers for CUDA purposes. I don't see my brother doing much render work, so I think he won't need to mess about.

AMD currently has faster cards than NVIDIA.

eg the rather pimping dual R9 295x that trounces pretty much anything Nvidia has to offer.
You do need an external PSU for that though, and its pretty unaffordable.

With a 3k budget, I think the 7950 is the best bet for that machine unless prices drop for the R9 290x's or the 660ti's.

X
