So work are giving me a phone in Jan - need to pick one from this list.

Nokia E52
Nokia E71
Blackberry Bold 9000
Blackberry Curve 8900
iPhone 3GS 16GB

Which should I choose?

I am leaning towards the iPhone surprisingly. What will it need to do? Well, internet connectivity is key, opening documents and such and messaging - I send a LOT of sms's.

Other than that, I would like a decent camera ( I know the iPhone doesn't even have a flash...) and for it not to be too big and bulky. (Though I think none of these phones is exactly slim and trim:o)

Any comments/experiences much appreciated.

I have already read the reviews on gsmarena which always guide me in my choices - but they all seem to be pretty equally spec'd.

Cheers

H

I've owned a fair number of phones over the years, N95's, N85's, HTC Kaiser, Imate's etc etc etc

But I love just about everything about my iPhone...

What I hate about the WM's phones is the number of key presses required to do such mundane tasks as sending an sms or making a call. The on screen keyboards that are unresponsive and inaccurate. The plethora of settings and configurations resulting in a sluggish, bloated, laptop wannabe..

The iPhone is the epitome of simplicity. An interface that is intuitive, responsive and precise in it's execution and functionality.

It never fails to amaze me how I can be browsing a webpage and there would be multitude of tiny hyperlinks/links barely visible. But if you can see them you can touch them and 9/10 the link touched is the link followed/activated.

Everything else just works. Wifi, SMS, MMS, EMAIL, CAMERA, PHONE easy to use, easy to configure, easy on the eye, ergonomically sound, responsive, accurate and made from the highest quality materials.

I've never understood the fanaticism and fanfare surrounding iPhones/iPods.... until now...

Nokia E71, E52 or BlackBerry Bold 9000.

The E71 and BlackBerry have hardware QWERTY keyboards, so that will really make SMSing much better. For battery life, however, seems like nothing comes close to the E52. All depends on you. I see that you also mentioned the phone should be slim - that would be the E52. Slim and narrow, which makes it much easier to hold.

Final question - would you like free on-device browsing? That might also guide your ultimate choice.

Thanks for the feedback...:)

Take it from someone that went through the same struggle as you are going through now, I compared and compared different phones for weeks and believe me I made the right choice!

I honestly believe there is nothing better than the IPhone 3GS

I think that I should also mention that I am not an Apple fan at all, but the iphone really made me change my mind!

iphone 3gs FTW!

Yeah, I have heard the battery life on the iPhone is not great - wondering how not great to be honest.

I can sms faster with a normal keypad than with a qwerty one - that is why I did not like the BB Curve at all...

Hehe, cool.

I am certainly NOT an Apple fan. Hate the fanbois and have never really considered an iPhone before - haven't had the need for any Apple product actually. But now, it is starting to look quite attractive.

If there is a single chink in the iPhones armour it has to the battery yes.

A single charge would buy you the following: around 40 minutes worth of calls, 30-40 smses, email download scheduled for once every 30 minutes and roughly 60 minutes worth of browsing.

I haven't really listened to music on the phone for extended periods of time so not sure how that depletes the battery. I did use it in the gym once for about 80 minutes and it used around 12% of the battery power.

So if you a power user a single charge should get you through the day but even if you a light user don't expect to get more than 2 days between charges..

Oh and don't underestimate the on screen qwerty keyboard on the iPhone.

I've always sworn by Nokias predictive text T9 keypad layout and for texting it is superb but take a week to get used to the iPhones keyboard and type on it holding the phone with both hands and use both hands as you would a regular keyboard and you'll be amazed at how good it is...

That is not too bad. As long as it can get through a day of decent usage without dying, that should be fine... Car chargers and laptop chargers and whatnot cannot hurt.

This is what people tell me. I gave it a go and it was really difficult - but it always takes time to get used to a new layout like that...

I take it you can also have a standard on-screen T9 keypad as well while you get used to the full qwerty one?

The 1st week I had the phone I so dreaded the qwerty K/B.

There is a multitude of 3rd party apps for the iPhone but as hard as I tried I could not find one that enabled a T9 on screen keypad.

So for a week or so I was miserable as all hell and initially I must say I resented the K/B but it is just so good that it is no longer an issue!!

EDIT: It's so odd, I picked up my E66 the other day and played around with the texting and I found it felt as queer as it had when I 1st started using the Apples K/B.

You must remember qwerty is the norm and is far more natural then any other inputing method. You will master it in no time!!!

Yeah I can also vouch for the keyboard on the iPhone. It takes a bit of getting used to but now I am fast. And the word correction is very good.

The battery gets me through one day. I usually charge it at night.

Cool. Sounds good. Definitely leaning towards the iPhone now. Will try to play about with one before I make the final decision.
