Help me point the finger. I'm guessing its Telkom

Hi All,
Internet suddenly went down about 3 days ago. I initially just left it for a while suspecting it was some sort of temp telkom issue. But then after a day and a half I started troubleshooting. Red led for internet on the Zyxel modem. The adsl light was steady green. I immediately suspected the ISP so I changed the details to a different account with the same result. Telkom says my line is syncing fine and have done a port reset. Webafrica claim that everything is good on their side. To completely absolve the ISP, I tried the Telkom guest account with the same result.

Webafrica says that they can't see any authentication requests coming through from the modem. So, I had to assume it must be the modem. Went out and bought a new billion modem yesterday with the same result. Although in this case the led for internet doesn't light up at all. I'm assuming that's a difference in the actual modems though. (The billion probably doesn't have a rgb Led).

Anyways, after all this testing, it must be the line at fault? Two different modems with a total of three different accounts can't be giving the same issue? It's not that it tries to authenticate and gets an authentication error. It seems that it the authentication requests don't ever leave the modem...

I logged a fault with Telkom even though they seem insistent that it's not their fault. Any of you ever had a similar experience? Thanks guys

Btw, I updated firmware on both adsl modems just in case. Sadly no help

Have you tried another modem?

Other than the original Zyxel that was working fine and the billion that was purchased? Don't really have another available. I had to purchase the Billion and have a few days left to return. I suppose I could ask my neighbour to test my modem on his line....Ifyou think it's still a possibility that the modem(s) are at fault

Odd, I'm having the exact same issue since yesterday. The modem status says it's connected, but it's not getting the required IP and stuffs, also leaning towards it not being able to authenticate as the logs show no authentication attempts (also tried different ISPs with the same outcome)

Not really sure how adsl works, but our telephone is still working, which means the line should be fine?

If that's the case, I imagine the problem is DSLAM related, but can only tell once I've tested the router elsewhere.

First I'd check the line stats in the router's config interface. Check the attenuation and SNR. If the stats are fine there, I'd give telkom a call and get them to log a fault with the line. I've seen situations where the line is barely able to sync with the exchange, but unable to go any further - thus showing up fine on their systems but in reality its still eff'd.

Hi Guys.

Thanks for your responses. All sorted. My advice is, when you've done the tests and you know its Telkom, log a fault. Insist that a senior technician look at your fault. Tell them you are prepared to pay if you are logging a fault for no reason.

Now to return that modem. R369 bucks is R369 bucks I could use this weekend.

A long long time ago, few years back, I think our Telkom account was not paid and when they suspended us I had the same issue.
Line would sync fine although I was unable to dial up a PPPoE connection via the router and even via Windows. Try dial up the account via Windows and see if it works.

Otherwise speak to Telkom and get them to make sure nothing is suspended on their end :)

Had a similar issue some weeks ago - also with web Africa. After numerous calls to the call centre and them saying that the fault was on Telkom's side - I could not get any joy out of Web Africa and in the end some screaming and shouting and getting downright nasty (This was after two weeks of being civilised) Web Africa got Telkom to sort out the problem.

The ADSL light comes on - checking the details revealed that the line is syncing but I was not able to authenticate - hence no internet light. Port resets did not help, I could not get a straight answer to what was fixed but after that it worked fine for two weeks until they stole the cable :-(
