All,

You lot helped me build my desktop pc in 2006. See thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=50302

A few days ago, I got hit by lightning and now the pc is not powering up...so I will be taking it in for repairs & thought I might as well do an upgrade; since I cant even play the basic games these days.

Ignoring the costs for repairs; which components do you suggest I upgrade? I dont want to spend more than R6-8k (excl cost for repairs).

My current specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz CPU; 2x1GB DDR2 667 Mhz; Intel 965 Lamont MB; 250GB SATA HDD; 256MB GeForce 7900GT PCI X16 V; Soundblaster ExtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro; DVDRW Internal Drive; 19” BENQ LCD Monitor

Tx

Well, you can spend about R4000 going i5 (mobo, cpu and ram), then you have R2k - R4k to get a sweet graphics card, such as an Ati 5850. Have a look at http://www.pcint.co.za/components.php for pricing, they don't sell the 5850 though so you'll need to get that from somewhere else.

Heck, you might have enough leftover cash to get a nice 500GB hardrive. You'll end up with a very nice upgrade :)

Still amazed at pcint pricing. Pity shipping from JHB to CPT would make the prices the same as here. :P But if they are retailers and not distributors then I guess the BEE thing is paying off in everyone's favour. :)

But, back to topic, definitely go i5. R4K should get you the i5-750 with an ASUS P7P55D and a couple sticks of 2GB RAM.

Assuming ofcourse you'll be keeping the chassis, drives, etc.

Yes, I will be keeping as many of the original components/chassis as I can. Will upgrading to a 5-750 with an ASUS P7P55D; be a significant leap in processing power compared to what I have (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz) ?

Yes, but for gaming your CPU is still fine.

I recommend sticking to your LGA775 motherboard and getting a Q9550 CPU @ ±R2200. Upgrade RAM to 4GB. You'll have R3 - R5k left to spend on a nice graphics card, perhaps better power supply. Maybe a 1TB HDD too. :)

If the CPU is still fine, should I just upgrade the graphics card and RAM? Which top end graphics card will go with this rig; and how much more RAM can I stick onto this motherboard. tx

Come on guys, I could really do with some advice here. Thanks! :erm:

If my motherboard and cpu is still fine, which graphics card (R4-5k) would go with my motherboard?

If i was in your position i'd keep the cpu and get a 5850 with a samsung2433bw.
